Richards The public is being soft-sold by the Interim Interim Waste Authority (IWA) said a Town of Newcastle resident on Thursday, Sept. 12. "This soft sell approach is so that the community is involved," said Stephen Wood during the IWA open house at the Bowman-, ville Recreation Complex. "How can the public help tell them how ' to find a site," said Mr. Wood. "Beefs won't tell them how to find a location." The idea of a six-step process meant to involve the public in the Durham Region is "a media ploy," Mr. Wood said. The public has been invited to help "identify" "identify" possible locations for a Durham Region only solid waste dump, said the IWA Durham Durham Program Advisor, Maurice Goodwin. "The public will have involvement all the way along," said Mr. Goodwin. "This way there will be a broader array of views," he noted. However, one resident living on County Road Nine, thinks it doesn't matter what the public thinks. "I'm skeptical," said Linda DiBartolo- meo. "I think in the end they will do what they'll want to do. "I hope it isn't a scam." The public consultations are expected to help provide basic criteria leading to the selection selection of a location that people will approve. approve. The last process, initiated by the Durham Region, did not include public input to such .an extent, said Kendal resident Dale Ding- man. One of the selected locations was near the Oshawa Ski Club in Kendal. "People who arc skiing don't want to look at a dump on the other side of the hill," she said. "The Durham Region is such a huge area," said Ms Dingman. "Yet they want to use prime farm land to locate a dump on. "I want to know what is going to go in there. I know we'll get Toronto's waste eventually," she added. "I'm sure there must be better areas," she said. The IWA expects to have a preliminary list of potential sites by this November. A short list is expected in February 1992. "In one year, we expect to say which of those is the preferred site, " said Mr. Goodwin. Goodwin. So far, the IWA has sponsored a total of eight open houses in Durham. Next on their agenda is to hold three workshops on the site search process, site search criteria and related related issues. The earliest start-up date for the landfill site is early 1996. The province is beginning a search for three sites in the Region of Peel and Durham and a shared site for Metropolitan Toronto and York Region.
