Game time is 7:30 p.m. UNRETIRED -- A note found its way across our desk last week advising us that Joe Kcnnett will be coming out of retirement, again, to officiate during the upcoming hockey season. It has us somewhat baffled. Is the announcement supposed to be good news or bad news? Guess it depends on who you ask. The Kinsmen Generals are in the finals and hold a two games-lo- zero lead in their best-of-five final.-Should they win, it will be the 12th year in a row they have captured the league championship. The league has been in operation for 13 years. There's something to be said about the underdog in this item. The Bowmanville Kinsmen hosted the local Terry Terry Fox Run on Sunday. Over 30 fund-raisers took part in the 10 kilometre run which started at Memorial Memorial Park Clubhouse in Bowmanville. One of the participants was 82-year-old Sylvia Barney, of Bowmanville, who successfully walked the course. She adds that since she walks every day she had no difficulty with the distance. However, this was the first time that Mrs. Barney had entered the Terry WHITE FLAG -- Just a thought. When Jim Acker, of the Toronto Blue Jays, is summoned to the mound, shouldn't he be carrying a white flag with him? Seems as though when he's brought into the game, the Jays arc conceding the victory. Numbers Add Up for Manager TRIVIA -- Who did the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select first overall in the 1986 NFL draft? That's why coach Mike Noonan pursued him throughout the summer. "Mike was unhappy with the situation here last year, and approached me a couple of times about being the manager manager of the team," said the Courtice resident during a recent recent practice."He knew what I was capable of and that I could get along with the kids. "Originally I said yes because because he is a good friend. He put me on the spot in the summer when they needed a decision, so I thought I'd give it a try. "When they called and told me I got the job, I wondered wondered what I had got myself into." However, he is more than capable of the tackling the position. In fact, with his impressive impressive track record and experience experience in hockey, one might almost say that he is over-qualified. Consider the following credentials he brings to the po&'imnvu.: -he played Jr. B in Whitby Whitby ' -he played a couple of exhibition exhibition games with the Jr. A Toronto Marlies -Sr. A in Whitby -a year of Jr. C for Ajax -He was offered a try-out at the Detroit Red Wings camp in the late' 60's. Or have you been out on the lake when the fishing action was hot, but then it stops? Ever try to figure out why or how a fish takes your lure? Fish have five senses: sight, sound, smell, touch, and something something called a lateral line. This lateral line runs down cither side of a fish. It allows a fish to determine which direction a movement may be coming from. They pick up vibrations in the water and can tell in which direction the object is to be found. This sense can play a big role in muddy or stained waters. Remember this next time, you fish Lake Scugog. I would suggest you use baits that give off a lot of vibration or rattle baits in any murky water. water. One overlooked area I sec most fishermen forget is scent. They don't take into account a fish's sense of smell. Let me try to explain a little about a fish's sense of smell. Who hasn't been driving along the road or highway and come across a dead skunk? Whew stinks! That's what a fish thinks of a human scent. A fish's sense of smell is 10,000 times greater then a dog's sense of smell. A dog's sense of smell is 10,000 time greater then a human. Next time you get a chance, watch a dog or cat eat. Watch and see them smell their food first. Fish prefer to smell their food first. Fish often pick up a bait, taste it, then spit it out if it tastes wrong. Just watch fish eating in an aquarium to see this fact. Go out and buy any one of the new fish scent products on the market and put some on your lure. I put scent on my hands first, before I handle any tackle. I will also slide my hand up my line with scent to mask any odors. My personal favorite is a product called Lock Jaw. It has a garlic base and they claim that a fish thinks it tastes like blood. If you want to increase your stringer weight, hide your skunky self from those smelly fish. Note: Congratulations to 'Big' Jim McLaughlin who won the GM Pro Bass Fall Challenge in Orillia. I will get a chance this week to fish with Big Jim and hope to profile this mountain of a man in an article soon. Big Jim is the only man to win the GM Pro Bass Classic twice. Fox trek. Durham TV Downs Hooper In a wcll-playcd game on Saturday, September 14, in Tyrone, Tyrone, Durham TV and Antenna defeated Hooper's Trophy, 2- 1, to capture the Mosquito Division Division in the Darlington Youth Soccer League Cup final. Hooper's Trophy opened the scoring on a comer kick that eluded the Durham TV and Antenna goalie on a rebound rebound off the post. That score held until half way through the second half, when Ben Tonks lifted a rising shot from 20 yards into the top corner of the net to tie the score. Both teams then entered overtime tied at a goal apiece. With action at both ends reaching reaching a frantic pace, parents were pacing and coaches pulled their hair out. Finally, at the 15 minute mark of overtime, Greg Stephenson, Stephenson, of Durham TV and Antenna, put the ball through to Ben Tonks who passed the ball to a rushing Peter Paradis, who made no mistake and kicked the ball into the right corner. The goal held up for a 2-1 win. Havng completed a couple of weeks of training camp, - and with a pair of exhibition games under his belt, Laing's perception of Bowmanvillc is an accurate one; Most kids who work their way up dirough the minor hockey system in Bowmanville Bowmanville aspire to play with the Eagles. There's nothing wrong with that. But Laing would like to see some of the more talented kids, who may be afraid to leave, branch out and play the best calibre of hockey they can.
