BHS Doors Open for 102nd Year Education The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, Wednesday, September 25,1991 5 On Tuesday, September 3rd, the doors of Bowmanvillc High School opened for the 102nd time. As Prime Minister of the student's council it has been non-stop action, running from one class to another while trying to return all the calls and attend all the meetings that the job calls for. Every year of High School presents new challenges to every student and this being my senior year I am trying not to get bogged down. Everyone has their own system of organization, the daily planners planners that the Students' Council gave out with the I.D. cards has proved indispensable to me and the majority of the OAC class. The Statesman has been gracious enough to give me this space in which to write each week. I would like to use it to keep the community up- to-date with the goings on of the Students' Council and the school. However, I think that this space would be well used to remind those of you who are long past high school of the trials and tribulations of a mod- C Religion and Worship TRINITY UNITED CHURCH Church and Division Streets Bowmanville, Ontsrlo Church Phone Office Phone 623-3912 623-3133 Rev. We were very delighted delighted to welcome our guest speaker, Mrs. Betty Turcott, President of the Oshawa Pres- byterial U.C.W. executive, and a well-known resident of Bowmanvillc. Bowmanvillc. Win Brown welcomed all to our Sunday service and led in a Call to Worship. Accompanied by our organist Glenda Hull, we joined to sing "Now With Creation's Morning Song," a hymn written by a Spanish lawyer over 500 years ago. A responsive reading from Psalm 98 followed. Win Brown reviewed the announcements in our bulletin which included our Maple Grove Autumn Supper to be held on Saturday, October 5, sittings at 5:00 and 6:30 p.m., tickets available from Dorothy and Paul McIntyre, Win Brown and Mildred Huband. The offering was received by Ruth Wood and Florence . Cryderman and dedicated with prayer. Our voices joined together again singing "In My Heart There Rings a Melody." Ruth Geddes, our UCW Vice-Pros., asked the children to come forward forward and treated us all to a story story about remembering that our church is not the building, but the people inside who care for one another. Dorothy McIntyre, Joan Russell and Kathy Makxam sang a trio entitled "Lift Thine Eyes" and then Muriel Johnson led us in scripture from Exodus 15. As Edna Laird introduced our special guest, Betty Turcott, Turcott, we learned of Betty's many varied interests, which included music. Wc indeed shared her love of music as she spoke about "Singing a Song of Joy." Betty feels singing is a wonderful way of communi- cating-with God. It is difficult for a congregation to choose a certain Hymn Book for their church because our needs change as generations go by. Many of our hymns have come from different denominations and cultures, and not all hymns i that are written survive the test of time. So far, the year has been going going well, there is a feeling of optimism in the halls of BHS, and with the help of the students, students, the staff and of course the community, this school year can be one of the best ever. Jeremy Rosenberg Teamwork is Essential hymns and their authors to speak about and then had us sing a few verses of each. She pointed out that if wc put a familiar familiar hymn to a different tunc or perhaps give a familiar tunc different words, wc might pay more attention to what that hymn is saying. ' She first spoke about the hymn "When I Survey the Wonderous Cross" written by Isaac Watts. Betty has discovered discovered that this hymn has been sung to 9 different tunes and has 9 different verses, not sung by all congregations. The second hymn was "Jesus "Jesus Lover of My Soul" written by Charles Wesley, having 3 different tunes. The words speak about truths he learned at a very early age from his mother. The third hymn we sang was "O Love That Will Not Let Me Go" by George Mathe- son who went blind by age 15. The words speak of his inner struggle after having been refused refused marriage by his fiancée because of his blindness. Betty made us realize that knowing more about the author and the circumstances under which the words were written brings a hymn to life for us. The fourth hymn she discussed discussed was "Jesus Calls Us O'er the Tumult" written by Cecil Frances Alexander as a request by her husband who was giving a sermon on the calling of disciples. The fifth choice was "I Need Thee Every Hour" written written by Annie S. Hawks as she was doing her simple chores. The very simplicity of the words have made it last as a favourite. favourite. Our closing hymn "Ours Is A Singing Faith" was written by June Parker Huber, 1985 and sutcly expressed Betty's message that the words of song carry God's message to us. Wc do indeed have a singing faith and Betty's insight into these special hymns gave us a new awareness. Win Brown invited one and all to join together in the Hall for coffee and socializing after 1 the service, and Betty closed with the Benediction. Press Sect., Kathy Makxam New Year at St. Stephen's By Tracy E. Rccd As another year has begun at the close-knit community of St. Stephen's High School, a number of activities have already already become a part of the 1991-92 school year.
