The fun, experimenting and decision-making are over. The time to get serious begins begins Friday, in Uxbridge, when the regular season kicks off. The lack of importance attached attached to Monday night's game in Cobourg was obvious. obvious. The Eagles lost, and nobody nobody was visibly upset or worried. Five of those seven came in the last four minutes. Two of them were in the last 33 seconds. The Eagles' second goal of the game, scored on a backhand by Dennis, came on the power play. With the pre-season out of the way, the Eagles can now concentrate on putting together together a solid regular season. With all of the final cuts made, the roster that was dressed for Monday's game will be the same one that opens the regular season. And that suits Noonan just fine. "The thing I like about it (the team) is they get along real well and it's a good nucleus. nucleus. We seem to have good spirit. They stick up for each other and that's going to be important down the road. "By the time we start working on our power play and special teams, I think we'll be all right." He is going to have his knee scoped on Friday. Cobourg 7 Eagles 4 The Cougars won the game, 7-4. The loss evened the Eagles' Eagles' pre-season mark at 3-3. After opening the season with a pair of losses to Uxbridge, the Eagles had won a pair of games from Port Perry, and another from the Cougars. Monday's loss halted their three-game winning streak. The loss was a team effort, as coach Noonan chose to employ four lines throughout the game, giving everybody > an equal opportunity to play in the final tune-up before the regular season. But the four-line format he . has used up to this point, will change starting Friday in Uxbridge. Uxbridge. , "We were flat tonight. , We're still going with four n lines and it's tough to get into the game. We are going to break it down now to a three , line situation and have a ! couple of extra forwards. If : the regulars aren't going, ; then they will fill in. "We got to get guys like : Shane (Armstrong) and Nick (Dennis) back on the ice,, more often, and that's basi- cally what is going to happen. ' They will get a lot of ice.' Penalty problems plagued the Eagles in the second period. period. A pair of power play goals by, Ian Smith broke open a one-goal game, giving the Cougars a commanding 6-3 lead. Taylor's goal late in the period brought the Eagles back to within two. The Cougars put the game out of reach seven minutes into the third period. Jason Holland, with his second of the night, beat goaltender Geoff Geoff Smith with a short-handed marker to put the Cougars up by three. Smith replaced starter Chris Massey midway through the second period. Smith was very sharp, especially especially in the third period with the Eagles trying to get back into the game. He allowed only one -- Holland's short- handed marker -- of the seven seven Cougar goals. Kevin Williams and Ian Smith also had a pair of goals for the Cougars. Trevor Clap- perton had the other. , The teams were scoreless eight minutes into the first period before the floodgates: opened. Leo made some sparkling saves and will undoubtedly return to his former former brilliance in the near future. future. Leo had no chance on the opening goal as Dave Roote sent Bob Sheridan in alone with a perfect pass. Jim Hutchison Hutchison lost the handle on a bouncing puck at the blue line which Sheridan picked up and handed to Rick Rademacher. Rick stormed in and drove the puck under Leo in the goalmouth. goalmouth. Busters then scored three quick goals. The first came on a George Sainsbury blast from Tony Jones and Sandy MacDonald. MacDonald. Jerry Dost scored his first of the season, assisted by Ron Hooper and Doug Cole. Ron then put Busters ahead on passes from Phil Fox and Brad Finucan. Art Hester made some fine saves in our net and we regained regained the momentum as Dave Roote scored his first of two, set up by Robert Stiles and Ron Clemens. Rick Rademacher Rademacher picked a rebound out of the air and drove the puck past Leo who had no chance. David Green and Warren Townslcy then set Bob Sheridan up in the goalmouth for his second. Dave Roote scored his second on passes from Stan Bozac and . Ron Clemens: 7', The, Newcastle team fought back with two goals by Phil Fox, both setup by Ron Hooper. Hooper. Tony Jones was sent away by Sandy MacDonald with a long pass and out-raced Bob Hellam. Tony scored the prettiest prettiest goal of the game as he slid a hard back-hand under Art Hester as our goaltender tried to out-guess this cunning marksman. Ron Henry got the puck to Phil Fox who sent George Sainsbury in alone on the left wing. George put a blast in on Art's short side and Busters went ahead 7-6. In the dying moments of this exciting contest, Rick Rademacher Rademacher dug the puck out of the comer and found Bob Sher idan in the goalmouth. Bob was fortunate to pick this puck up in a crowd and drive it under under Leo to gain the tie. Our defense corps of Hugh German, Warren Townslcy, Ron Clemens and Bob Hellam put in a solid effort. Our next game is again with Busters at 8:00 p.m., Friday night in Bowmanville arena. Canadian Tire Ready for New Season With 7-1 Win by John Hand On Saturday, September 28, the Canadian Tire major pee- wees 'AA' Toros rounded off their pre-season schedule with a convincing 7-1 victory over Pickering. The team got off to a great start with an unassisted goal by Ryan Latimer after just 33 seconds seconds of the first period, and they never looked back. At 5:01 of the period, Paul Laval- ee made it 2-0 with assists going going to Kevin Pickell and Matt Staley. Pickering scored early in the second period, but goals by Eric Zuvic and Ryan Dunnigan blew the game wide open. Assists Assists went to Tony Butzcr, Ryan Lavalee, Wade Peacock and Nick Hand. Just 1:30 into the third period, period, Dunnigan took a slapshot to the wrist and had to leave the game, but not before he put the puck in the net for his second second goal of the game. Scoring in the third period was rounded out by Tony Butzer and Eric Zuvic with his second goal of the game. Assists in the period went to Steve Brinkman, Jason MacLean, Lavalee, Butzcr, Staley and Latimer. The goaltending duties for this game were shared by Mark Survivors Capture Ladies Slo-Pitch "B" Title Murphy and John Cannito. Derek Lange, Jason Bray and Derek Arnold also played well for the Toros. Coaching the Canadian Tire team this year is Jeff Smith with help behind the bench from trainer Louis Miller. Bob Brinkman is. the manager. The team has a big weekend coming up to start their inaugural inaugural year of 'AA' hockey in Bowmanville. On Friday, October October 4, they travel to Stouff- villc for a 9:15 p.m. game. They then host Pickering at Darlington Arena on Saturday, October 5 at 4:30 p.m. They finish up the weekend in Peterborough Peterborough on Sunday. • By Brad Kelly Eagles Have Feathers to Clip The initiation ceremony the Bowmanville Eagle veterans conduct this year for the rookies will be an assembly line. The quantity of the traditional preseason preseason haircuts will far outweigh the quality. The Eagles will open the regular season in Uxbridge Uxbridge this Friday night with 12 players who will be in their first year with the club. That's something something almost unheard of at the junior level. It's almost as many new faces as we'll see on town council following November's election. Sharpen the shears. That's a lot of changes to a team that came within within one goal of winning the league championship a year ago. Time will tell if the overhaul was for the better. And time is something that it may take before anyone can get a gauge on how good this team is. "I think we'll be a little stronger than you think right off the bat," said manager Mike Laing, also a new face in the Eagles' fold. "It will take 3-4 weeks for everyone to get used to playing with each other. We might not win the league, but we'll be up there. "The veterans have come up to me and said this is a stronger team than last year's." Where this team appears to be stronger is in its depth. It was a lack of depth that cost the Eagles in the playoffs last year. This became apparent in their seven-game league final series against Uxbridge. They're strong up front. Veterans Shane Armstrong, Armstrong, Nick Dennis and Rob Real will be relied upon heavily to make major contributions. Especially Especially Armstrong. Offensively, he has an opportunity opportunity to be the dominant player in the league. The only question mark the club has is on the blueline. Inexperience may be a problem. Four of the rearguards are untested. Once you get past veterans Dean Baumhauer and Drew Allenby, none of the others has proven himself at this level. But, as suspect as their defence is, Laing points out that it isn't a defenceman they will be keeping their eyes open for should they add another player to their roster. "We're not actively looking. If a good right winger winger or centreman comes up, we might take him. "But these kids have been here a while and we don't want to let any of them go to bring somebody else in. We've got a solid team that is getting along, and I don't want to have a revolving door." Where will they finish? Well, Uxbridge looks strong again, and it appears Port Perry may struggle. struggle. Cobourg is much improved, and we've yet to see Lakefield and Little Britain. There would be no shame in finishing second to Uxbridge. Anything less than third would be a disappointment. disappointment. Newcastle Ladies Slow Pitch ANNUAL MEETING October 3 7:00 p.m. Court Room 1, Church St. Bowmanville, Ont. Little Brother Corner...
