Candidates Candidates competed for the honour of winning the Table Topics and Tall Talcs Contests. The Table Topics Contests requires that competitors be escorted escorted from the room, then be brought back in to speak individually individually on the same 2-3 minute minute topic, in this case, "Going my Way". Toastmasters must bring into play all they have learned in the art of effective communication-an opening, body, and conclusion, with appropriate appropriate gestures, eye contact, vocal variety, and so forth. The challenge, of course, is that the topic is not known before the speaker enters the room. For the Tall Talcs Contest, speakers must come up with a highly exaggerated, improba ble story with a theme or plot. Humour and props may be used, and the subject is prepared prepared ahead of time by the contestant. contestant. There were seven participants participants in all for both contests, and Toastmaster Wanda Huntington Huntington and Toastmaster Shcr Lcctoozc were winners of the Table Topics and Tall Tales contests respectively. Toastmaster Toastmaster Lcctoozc came dressed for the part of storyteller in a pair of brown breeches and cloth cap. She recounted the adventures of one of the Gaelic "little people", Scan O'Mara, who can change his venue at the wink of an eye. Chairman Gordon West opened the meeting by telling us how human beings arc obsessed obsessed with the passage of time. He quoted from a poem by an unknown author entitled "Take Time". "Take Time to think --/ It is the source of power. /Take time to play -/ It is the secret of perpetual youth./ Take time to read --/ It is the fountain of wisdom./ Take time to pray --/ It is the greatest power on earth. /Take time to love and be loved --/ It is a God-given privilege./ The Spark-Plug award went to Toastmaster Nancy Bamcs for best "sparking" the business business session with timely and appropriate comments and the implementation of Roberts Rules of Order. Participation in contests is only a part of what may be accomplished accomplished in Toastmasters, but it is an important step for more experienced speakers. It enables them to truly test their mcltle against other speakers, and compels them to grow as communicators by stepping out of their comfort zones. A great bonus from membership membership in Toastmasters is the honest compliments you will receive for job well-done. Mark Twain observed, "I can live two months on one good compliment. "Yet in today's busy world praise is easily squeezed out. An article in the September issue of the Toastmaster's Toastmaster's magazine on the power power of compliments ends with the observation:"...a compliment compliment is a gift that costs nothing but can mean everything. Poet John Milton once said: 'Apt words have power to assuage the tumors of a troubled mind.' And all it takes to give this marvelous gift is an open heart. Bowmanvillc Toastmasters meet every Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. in the St. John's Parish Parish Hall, comer of Queen and Temperance Streets in Bowmanvillc. Bowmanvillc. Guests arc always welcome, and will not be asked to participate unless they choose to do so.
