7 v ForYour by Dr. Janice Alain and Dr. Everett Turner Winterizing Your Pets Fall is here and it won't be long before winter is upon us. Pets generally enjoy these seasons, but the approaching cold weather presents some special concerns for them. Antifreeze is a highly toxic compound to pets. Dogs and cats arc especially attracted to it and to it and will readily ingest ingest it. A very small amount, as little as 1 ml/kg for cals (1 tsp. for the average cal) and 4 ml/kg (1/4 cup for a 40 lb. dog) may be fatal. Pet owners should take care to store antifreeze in tightly scaled containers and out of reach of pets. Any spills or leaks should be cleaned promptly and thoroughly. Containers and contaminated rags should be properly disposed. Those who place antifreeze in the cottage toilet should take extra care that their pets can not drink it. If you suspect your pet may have ingested antifreeze contact a veterinarian immediately. Automobiles arc a danger to pets at any time especially to pets that are allowed to roam. The obvious problem is that of being hit. The wet and iccy conditions of fall and winter make it much harder for drivers to avoid hitting animals. The solution solution is not to allow your pet to roam. A not so obvious problem is that of the attraction of warm engine compartment may hold for your cat on a cold evening. Cats often climb under the hood of a recently parked car for the warmth and comfort but may go for a quite unpleasant and often injurious or fatal ride. If your cat spends time outside during the cooler weather especially especially the evenings, it is wise to bang on the hood of your car before getting in and driving off. Pets that spend a great deal of time out of doors in the cooler cooler weather have some special needs. They need a dry, draft- free shelter. It docs not need to be heated but should have some bedding material into which the animal can snuggle. Your veterinarian can provide you with information on various shelters for our climate. These pets generally have an increased need for calorics. Their food allotment should be increased accordingly. accordingly. It is important to remember that they also need water, water, Water is rallier hard to drink if it is frozen. Young puppies and kittens are especially susceptible to the cold. While they, can go outside they should not do so until they arc at least 8 weeks of age and then only for brief, supervised periods. You should consult you veterinarian for specific recommendations regarding your pet. There are other winter time problems that may arise. Cats arc particularly subject to frostbite at the tips of their cars and tail. Dogs, especially those with lots of hair between their toes, may develop sore feet from ice and salt balls while being walked. Ingestion of roadside snow may cause GI upsets. Dogs may develop a taste for "poopsicilcs" while playing with frozen frozen stool. If you have concerns please contact your veterinarian. Have a pleasant and safe winter season. Ghost In recent years, there has been a lot of talk about stress. Nearly every month, a new study surfaces linking stress to a common social problem or physical illness. The latest research, research, for example, shows that up to 80 per cent of family doctor's visits can be attributed to some sort of high stress build-up. Although stress is being recognized by professionals as a legitimate and serious health concern, few people understand understand how stress can affect relationships relationships in the family. I am often asked to explain what stress is and how it works. Stress is heat Perhaps the easiest way to understand family stress is to think of it as a source of heat. Just like water on a stove that rises degree by degree, stress usually builds gradually in a family over several days, weeks or months. Now in ils ninth year, Agri- Food Week will be cclcbralcd throughout the province this year with a new theme - "Good for Y ou, Ontario! " "Ontario's agri-food and related related industries generale some $17 billion worth of economic activity caclt year and creates more than one in every ten jobs in Ontario. And that's 'good for you'," said Joyce Anderson, Anderson, a farmer and chairperson of the 1991 Agri-Food Week Committee, ly, like water on the burner, family stress can reach very high temperatures without being being detected; and then, suddenly, suddenly, it will boil over for no apparent apparent reason. The secret to dealing with family stress is recognition. If we can lcam to recognize the early warning signs of high stress, we can take corrective steps to help "cool" down potentially potentially explosive situations. Because just as little situations and events cause stress to rise slowly, families can make minor minor changes and adjustments to lower the "heat" in their homes degree by degree. New Research During the last several months, I have worked with The Independent Order of Foresters Foresters on some of the first research research into family stress. We found, among other things, that family stress is on the rise in Canada and that the leading causes of stress have changed significantly during the past ten years, Today, the leading causes of stress arc too many demands and balancing work and family; in 1980 they were job and marital problems. Those findings certainly reflect reflect the enormous changes we have experienced as a society during the past decade: the increase increase of women in the nation's nation's workforce, the softening economy, the increase in employee employee workloads, and a return to more traditional family values values with a renewed emphasis on parenting and child-raising. Considering the circumstances, circumstances, it is not surprising to sec stress levels rise, But how do we learn to manage stress? How do we learn to avoid that dangerous boiling point? How do we lcam to "cool" down quickly when stress gels too high and tempers erupt? To help families recognize where they stand, I recently developed developed the IOF Foresters Family Stress Test - an easy- to-use 24-question test that enables enables you to measure your family's family's stress level on a "Family Stress Thermometer" and see how you are coping with stress compared to other Canadian families. Information available Once you have taken the test, you can also send away to the IOF for a free Managing Family Stress information kit containing educational literature literature and an audio tape that I developed based on our research research findings. The tape will give you specific tips and ad vice for dealing with some of the more common problem areas areas such as communication, compromise, and respect. I would invite all Canadians to take the IOF Foresters Family Family Stress Test as a first-step to learning more about this im portant issue. It is available free of charge by calling The Independent Order of Foresters toll-free at 1-800-268-6267. KI9I0002 XXfônt to lower your Electric Heating Bill and add Air Conditioning? a" 7 ' V ]/ J'V&rv.i? &gr V If your home is heated electrically, electrically, and you're thinking of adding air conditioning, take a look at heat pumps. Many people have heard of heat pumps but aren't quite sure what they are or what they do. Quite simply, heat pumps use the same kind of technology as refrigerators. A fridge doesn't make cold air. It pumps out the warm air, leaving the inside of the fridge cool. A heat pump works the same way In the summer, it takes the heat out of your house to air condition condition it. In the winter it reverses itself to extract the heat from the outside air and transfer it into your house. (Even in winter, there is lots of heat in the air.) On top of all this, a heat pump will cut your electric heating heating bill by up to 30%. Unlike traditional heating systems, a heat pump doesn't consume energy to produce heat. It needs energy only for its fans and compressor. Call us for more information on heat pump rebates.
