I r Business and Finance Changes Made to Out-of-Country Hospital Care More than 100 local senior citizens turned out last Wednesday to the Port Darlington Darlington Marina to attend a free information seminar regarding the recent changes to out-of- country travellers emergency hospital and medical insurance. The seminar was sponsored by- Goligcr's Travel in the Bow- manvillc Mall and the Voyageur Voyageur Insurance Company. The seminar was chaired by Jim Knight of Goligcr's Travel but the keynote speaker for the evening was Marie Salter from Voyageur Insurance. Mr. Salter Salter gave the audience a detailed overview of the recent changes to the out-of-country health insurance insurance situation. The budget speech of the Minister of Finance of Ontario, Floyd Laughren, earlier this year indicated, in part, that the spiralling costs of medical care for out-of-province treatment of Ontario residents required that a review of the benefits payment system would be un- dertaken. Ontario would pay for out-of-country medical costs at the same rates that they would pay had the person been injured or ill in Ontario. Presently, the average cost Real Estate Î r « !' Previously, OHP reimbursed Ontario résidons résidons between Si,700.00 and $1,(00.00 of this cost and the lrav:l or private insurance company picked up the excess. Effective October 1, 1991, the Government of Ontario will Reduce their benefit payment' payment' up to $400.00 per day. This 'considerable reduction in benefit payment means that travellers must protect them- sclvot with proper insurance coverage. Because of these changes, privjte insurers have had to in- crealc their rates drastically. Sonjc of these increases arc as high as 300% which as raised thc|rc of many local senior cit izens. After Mr. Salter's presentation, presentation, the floor was opened for questions and the audience responded responded vigorously. A great number of the questions dealt with insurance being offered by bank gold cards and union and corporation private insurance insurance plans as to whether these rates and the applicable coverage coverage would change in the near future. Mr. Salter's response was that almost every policy was different and he recommended recommended strongly that all insurance insurance policies be read very carefully and be understood prior to embarking on a trip. Another concern to many was whether their insurance coverage would be accepted at the medical facility of their choice. Mr. Salter stated that most insurance companies have a restricted list of facilities facilities and added that Voyageur was accepted at all out-ofcountry out-ofcountry facilities. It was also recommended that if emergency emergency services were required and monies needed to be forwarded that the traveller or companion should have their policy with them at all times. The evening was. wrapped up with the strong advice that the traveller be sure of what insurance insurance they have in place and that any such policy be available available to the attending facility upon admittance. Proper insurance insurance can mean the difference between a successful and happy happy trip or a financial catastrophe. catastrophe. Branch Manager Tom daSilva and colleague Diane Rekker explained the new service to interested seniors prior to their first visit. Starting today (Wednesday, October 2) Strath Manor and Strathaven residents will be able to do their banking in their own building. Every Wednesday, the Bowmanville National Trust branch plans to bring banking services to the 50 Strath Manor retirees and the 164 Strathaven nursing home residents who live at the facilities located on King St. in Bowmanville. Identical Identical banking programs have been successfully established in Lindsay and Ottawa by the National Trust company in an effort to better serve older, less active clients. Retirees and residents at Strathaven will be able to withdraw withdraw funds, pay monthly bills through written authorization, deposit pension cheques, and purchase GIC's or CSB's. "Rather than having clients leave the nursing home to face inclement weather and heavy traffic, all their banking needs will be provided right at Strathaven," Strathaven," explained Tom daSilva, daSilva, manager of the National Trust in Bowmanville. He was speaking at an informal, introductory introductory meeting last Wednesday Wednesday in the auditorium at Strathaven. Strathaven. Tea was served and carnations given out at the door. "Some of our older clients need to see the faces of people, so we need to build and establish establish a trust." said daSilva. Although no more than a dozen seniors attended the seminar, the bankers were not discouraged. "We didn't have any illusions illusions about numbers going in to this. It typically starts slow, and grows. This was the case in Lindsay and Ottawa," said Mr. daSilva. Judging by the group that did gather to hear National Trust's presentation, the most sought-after banking services were financial advice and clear answers to concerns regarding personal investments. The seniors requested information information on wills, power of attorney, attorney, short-term investments and quarterly income tax payment payment services. Ralph Inglefield, a banker with National Trust, was happy to answer many of the inquiries. inquiries. "We're in for the longterm," longterm," he said. "It's a service wc feel is needed, and we're making the commitment to provide it."
