The meeting discussed at great length that if the highway must be built then it must follow follow the northern route. The committee had a video tape of the proposed routes taken from an airplane. This tape was viewed by the meeting, showing showing both the furthest north route and the propsed southern route. There was a general consensus consensus that the north route showed much less desirable land and that the southern route was much more heavily populated and actively farmed. The committee intends to provide provide the Town of Newcastle Council, the Durham Region Council and the Ministry of Transportation with copies of this video tape. Excerpts were read from a newspaper report in the Canadian Canadian Statesman from May 22, 1991 where Mr. Doug Gouttes from Parker Consultants Ltd. was quoted as saying that the southern route "effects more residents than the other two routes, but it is the best overall". overall". He noted that the Oak Ridges Marine, Agricultural operations and Mosport Park were all considered in the process process of establishing a highway 407 corridor. Those attending the meeting were incensed at these remarks. "If the Oak Ridge Marine was so important, then why is it that they are allowing it to be tracked away (gravel) by the thousands of tons per day?" said Art McLaren, a local businessman. businessman. Others stated that the video tape clearly showed that thousands of acres of valuable and irreplaceable farm land would be destroyed by the pro posed southern route, whereas very little of the northern route was being farmed. Other meeting meeting participants stated that the southern route was extremely short-sighted and any highway project should be built north of the Marine. Many views were expressed, expressed, but these views were summarized in two motions which were presented, discussed discussed and unanimously supported supported by all assembled. Mayor Mayor Hubbard told the meeting that, contrary to a report from the MOT's consultants, the Town of Newcastle has not endorsed endorsed any plan for the proposed proposed highway. The meeting resolved to continue and expand this protest of highway 407 until such time as Provincial authorities authorities and Municipal councils agree to cancel this highway program. A letter-writing campaign campaign was launched and participants participants were given a list of Provincial Provincial decision-makers to whom they could voice their concerns; and opposition, AGREAT CHRISTMAS GIFT IDEA!!!
