Our photographer caught this young patron just as he was reaching out to touch a black-nosed homemade homemade cloth lamb that attracted his attention. by Ross Stevenson / M.P., Durham j While I'm sure many Canadians Canadians would rather endure a toothache than be asked to think about the Constitution, I'm urging you to give it your attention one more time. On September 24th a new package of proposals was unveiled unveiled at Ottawa. They were offered as the basis for discussions discussions about renewing our Canadian Canadian federation. The outcome outcome has to be of incalculable importance to each and every one of us. It's no exaggeration to say Canada's future is at stake. I don't need to remind you of the dissatisfaction among aboriginal aboriginal Canadians, or of the continuing jurisdiction disputes between the different regions and levels of government. The new federal proposals are by no means the final word on how to remedy all that. They're meant to give a general general indication of where we should be going. They're open to debate, as well as to suggestions suggestions about how they can be improved or expanded. The aim is to redefine our nation - to create a Canada with which we all can identify and in which all Canadians will feel accepted and respected. respected. We're looking at some fundamental fundamental changes, the type that are never made easily. Most of us are descended from people who came here from other parts of the world in search of a better life. Many did find it, and in the process built a society society based on equality and justice. justice. They built so well that today today we have a country in which virtually anyone would prefer to live. But the Constitution is a major flaw in that structure, because because it doesn't satisfy the aspirations aspirations of all Canadians. You can obtain information about the federal government's constitution proposals simply by telephoning toll-free 1-800- 561-1188. For those who are deaf or have impaired hearing, the number is 1-800-567-1992. A special all-party Parliamentary Parliamentary Committee has been formed to travel the country over the next five months, to hear what Canadians think about the new Constitution proposals. This Committee is to submit its recommendations at the end of February/ Everyone Everyone has a right to be involved. I know there arc a lot of people who will have neither the time nor the inclination to attend the Committee's sessions. sessions. And obviously there are physical limits on how many organizations and individuals can actually be heard by the Committee. However I would be pleased to meet personally with any groups in Durham who, after studying the proposals, proposals, have views and concerns they would like to discuss and convey to Ottawa. If you'd like to arrange such a meeting, please let me know by calling my Oshawa Constituency Office Office at 571-5430 or Zenith 9- 6130. I'll look forward to hearing from you.
