Durham Regional Police. These pieces of equipment When children and the Lord Elgin School's older students were given the grand tour of a school bus last week. More importantly, they were told how to behave on a school bus and how to cope with an emergency if one should arise while riding the bus. In this photo, grade five student Jennifer Cooper pushes out the emergency exit window. She and her classmates learned that an alarm buzzes if one of the emergency windows windows is being opened and that students should only open these windows during an emergency. driver must leave the bus, the First Aid kit is taken by the driver. The radio can only be used when the key is in the ignition or turned to accessories. accessories. The next trick is remembering remembering how to use the radio. The on/off switch must be switched on and the button on the side of the hand-held speaker must be pushed in before and while speaking. To hear a reply the button must be jutting out of the unit. Next is the axe. "Every school bus has one," said Officer Wraight. "There is an important reason why there is one on each bus--you might need to break a window and knock it out." Depending on the circumstances circumstances and the emergency, students and their driver might have to exit the bus through the front window. The axe makes that easier to accomplish, he said. "The axe is always located up front." The fire extinguisher on board a bus is useful for putting putting out a fire. However, that depends on how it is used, said Officer Wraight. "First you pull out the pin, the two sections will pull together together and then it will begin to spray. "Don't spray all around. "Even thought the container container is large, the spray itself . will only last 45 seconds to one minute." To avoid not losing the spray's effectiveness, Officer Wraight, told the students that the spray is to be directed to the base or bottom of a fire. The final piece of safety equipment that can be removed removed from the bus in an emergency is the reflectors. In the particular bus Officer Officer Wraight and the students were in, the reflectors were located in a box underneath the front seat, behind the bus driver. "One is set before the bus and the other is set-up behind the bus. "This warns other drivers that they should travel with caution in this area." The children were then taught about the four different different safety exits on the bus: the front door, the back door and the two emergency windows windows at the middle of the vehicle. vehicle. "Always remember that the driver is the boss," Officer Officer Wraight said to the students. students. Officer Wraight asked the students if they knew what to do if there was a small collision collision involving the bus and another vehicle. A couple of voices rang out, "Get off the bus." - However, that was not the response the police officer was looking for. "Stay where you are. This is the safest place for you," he replied. However, if there is smoke visible, then the bus driver will assess the situation situation and decide what to do next. The students were instructed instructed to follow the directions directions of the driver to the letter. letter. Bus drivers are in charge of making sure the children are safe while riding the school bus on field trips and going to school each day, said Officer Wraight. Outdoor Ed. at Knox Christian Fair Glen Christian Outdoor Education Camp is a place that offers many activities for youths. I went there for a three day field trip with the grades seven and eight from Knox and Immanuel Christian Schools. Wé left on Monday, September 9 at 10:30 a.m. Finally after an hour and a half, we arrived at Fair Glen with our many, many bags. One of the educational activities activities I liked was the visit to the Old Stone Church. There we observed gravestones, some very recent and others 160 years old! What I really enjoyed enjoyed was doing gravestone rubbings by placing white paper on the headstone and lightly colour over the paper with a crayon. It turned out nice. The. activity I liked the best was when we went into the meadow to catch insects. We each picked a partner and together together we tried to trap these little little camouflaged animals. After we caught the insects, we described described and identified them and let them go. During our free time, we were permitted to go swimming swimming in the lake or inground pool, BMX racing, skateboard, practice archery and much more. My very favourite was the archery practice. It was soooo fun! I thought that I was pretty good at it too. (Please excuse my immodesty.) After an hour of archery, my right index index and middle fingers were very sore from pulling back the strings of the bow. On the second night there, we played Capture the Flag. The teams were boys against girls. I thought that was unfair because for two thirds of the time, I was in jail. He handed me over to Nathan and Ryan. They took me to jail and bribed me to tell them where our flag was and then they'd free me. But I told them that I didn't know. (Which was the troth.) After staying in jail and listening listening to other prisoners scream their lungs out, I heard the Bell of Jubilee which indicated indicated that all captives were free. I was free for two minutes before it started to pour. Everybody Everybody headed for the Dining Hall for treats. Canoeing was great but strenuous on your arms. My partner was Josh Buwalda from Immanuel. He kept on telling me what an amateur canoeist canoeist I was, because I was sitting sitting in the front, I splashed him with my paddle. He was soaking soaking from the waist down and didn't remark what an amateur I was again! The food at Fair Glen was delicious. Breakfast consisted of milk, orange juice, pancakes, pancakes, toast and cereal. Lunch and dinner was basically the same with scalloped potatoes, noodles, beans, ham, chips and hamburgers. All of it was fantastic! fantastic! Setting the tables and washing washing the dishes was done by everybody in groups of five. At each table, there was a hopper and a slopper. Hoppers bring food to the tables and sloppers clear away extra food and wash the tables. The' girls slept in the dorm and the boys in cabins. I shared a room with Tracy, Kelly, Lisa and Linda. Amazingly none of us snored, but the beds made a lot of noise. I have no complaint about Fair Glen this year except for the creaky beds! Fair Glen was really enjoyable enjoyable for me. Too bad this was my last year there.
