The Ontario government is pledging an additional S35.5 million to help farmers and rural rural communities suffering from low commodity prices, drought and other pressures, Ontario Agriculture and Food Minister Elmer Buchanan announced today. today. "Agriculture remains a key sector in the province's economic economic renewal strategy," Buchanan Buchanan said. "In keeping with this commitment, and in response response to discussions with farmers and farm leaders, I am pleased that we arc able to provide provide this assistance package." The package consists of five components: $11 million in additional funding to the $50-million Farm Interest Assistance Program Program to cover all applicants to the program. The program was introduced in April to offset interest interest costs. The program is well-subscribed and so far more than 7,700 farmers have received an average of more than $4,000 each. $15 million to eligible grain and oilseed farmers equal to the costs of premiums they paid into the provincial Farm Income Stabilization program for the 1990/91 crop year. $5 million to producers of edible horticulture crops. This amount equals one per cent of net sales as calculated under the Net Income Stabilization Account (NISA) for the 1990 tax year. $1 million to apple, onion, honey and fur producers. This amount is also calculated as one per cent of net sales under NISA, although these commodities commodities arc not currently included included in the NISA program. Buchanan said that he will negotiate negotiate with the federal government government using these funds to include include these commodities for eligibility under the program. $3.5 million to farmers and farm families experiencing financial financial stress from market prices or drought. Details of this component will be finalized finalized after consultation with farm groups. "We recognize that money is not the solution to all the problems pressing on our farms and fanning communities communities and we know that this money alone is not enough," Buchanan said. "But I remain confident that this new injection injection of funding, coupled with the cash flow which will result from the interim GRIP payout, will help bridge financially troubled fanners until next year when long-tcnn programs take effect."
