If they were to offer a line on the game, Port Hope would have surely been the favourite by as many as 10 goals. Clarke managed to beat the spread, however, dropping dropping a 3-1 decision to the top- rated team in the South Kaw- artha senior boys' soccer league. Port Hope 3 Clarke 1 Considering that Clarke has a senior team for the first time in quite a while at the school, and that Port Hope entered the game in first place and undefeated at 5-0, the game spelled a mismatch. mismatch. Take into account \ that Clarke was coming off a 12-L V ÉÊ^ÈÊÊÊÊÊÊÊ thrashing at the hands of the second place team in the league from St. Stephen's, and you begin to understand why odds-makers would have made Port Hope such an overwhelming favourite. So, to get beaten by only two goals to the number one ranked team in the league was a victory of sorts for Clarke. If not on the score- board, then at least it was a victory to the morale of the team. "It was a morale booster," booster," agreed coach John Gale. "We never gave up and that's what I appreciate about these guys. They always give 100%. "Some teams will beat us on skill and that's fine, as long as our guys never give up." The attitude of the players is definitely in the right place. After getting beaten so soundly by St. Stephen's in their previous game, they had every reason to go through the motions against Port Hope. They didn't. And their work ethic and gritty performance performance drew praise from Gale. "We never fold our tent," he said. "We always try 100%. Sometimes we don't do the smartest things, but that's just inexperience." Port Hope controlled the opening half of play, as was expected, but could only manage to score twice on Clarke goalie Cameron Esler. After Port Hope went ahead by three goals in the second half, Clarke managed to score on one of their few opportunities mid-way through the half. Greg Hooper sent a ball to Tyler Smith who teed it up for Jim Parmer. Partner's blast sailed over the head of the Port Hope goalie, and found its way into the net just under the crossbar. Clarke players reacted like they had just scored the winning winning goal in the World Cup. They had every right to. Gale pointed out that he was pleased with the strong play of Brendenn Bates, Ian Dcwcll and Mike McKclvic. Esler was also sharp in net for Clarke. He faced more shots than a duck would during during the opening day of hunting hunting season. The strong play of the above mentioned players -- especially Dewcll, who is in grade nine -- bodes well for the future of soccer at Clarke. "This team, in the years to come, will do fine," coach Gale predicted. "We'll be competitive, maybe not this year. Hopefully next year we'll be .500 and we'll keep on improving." Clarke will be hosting a six-team tournament at the Orono Fairgrounds this Saturday. Saturday. Money raised will be used for the purchase of team jackets. Captures Area Soccer Title gle and double 'A' level certainly certainly gave the Toro players some degree of confidence, the pre-game feeling among their fans and parents was one of uncertainty. uncertainty. Would they be outplayed, outplayed, outskated and intimidated intimidated by the triple *A' caliber of hockey? If the Toro atom players shared any of their parents' reservations, they certainly didn't show it. The moment the puck was dropped in the opening opening period, they demonstrated that they were there to play hockey. Less than a minute into the game, centreman Jason Lange used his impressive wrist shot to put the scorekeep- er to work. As expected in this level of hockey, the Oshawa team didn't let that goal demoralize demoralize them and they replied with the tieing goal only seconds seconds later. With a 1-1 tie, both teams increased their offensive pressure in hopes of getting the go-ahead goal. To the delight of the Toro fans, winger Chris McKenzie got a nice pass from Chris Pot and fooled the Oshawa goalie with a flip of the puck. Again, with only ten seconds left, Oshawa tied the game. For the next two periods, the Toro major atoms dominated dominated the scoreboard by adding four more goals, while Oshawa was shutdown. However, the game was closer than the final score of 6-2. The.Oshawa forwards forwards did have opportunities to score, but superb goaltending- by Nick Adams and Greg Kocnderman as well as the goalpost proved to be a source of frustration to them.
