10 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, Wednesday, October 23,1991 Jackman Leads with 6 points St. Stephen's Wins Hockey Opener 6-4 by Brad Kelly Only one game into the season, there is one visible difference between the St. Stephen's hockey team and their senior boys' soccer team. The athletic department had to recruit a player from die Caribbean island of St. Lucia to lead its powerful soccer team. For hockey, they had to look no further than the town in which the school is located to find a leader. Bowmanvillc resident Jason Jason Jackman fired four goals and added a pair of assists assists to lead St. Stephen's to a 6-4 win over St. Mary's (Co- bourg) last Thursday. It Moloney was the inaugural inaugural game of the Kawartha boys hockey league. It's the first year of operation operation for the four-team high school league which also includes includes Clarke and Port Hope. Each team in the league will play the others four times, with playoffs scheduled to conclude before Christmas. It was a well-earned victory victory for St. Stephen's, who trailed 2-0 after the first, and 4-3 early in the third. A per sistent offensive attack, led by Jackman who scored the first three St. Stephen's goals, enabled them to gain the comc-from-bchind win. They started slowly, but as the game progressed, St. Stephen's Stephen's began to build some momentum. Their confidence began to show by the third period as they outscorcd St. Marys 3-1 to break open a 3- 3 lie. With limited practice time, the slow start was predictable said St. Stephen's coach, Father Father Bill Moloney. "We only had two try-out practices (prior to the game) and I think they were starting to get used to one another. "There was also a little bit of nervousness. We have three grade nines on the team and I think they were a little worried, wondering what it was going to be like at first. After the first period, they loosened up a little bit." Mike Talotli also had a big game offensively for St. Stephen's. He collected a pair of goals and assisted on three of Jackman's four goals. - - After falling behind 3-0 early in the second period, Jackman recorded a hat-trick to pull St. Stephen's into a 3- 3 lie. His third goal, with 18 seconds remaining in the period, period, was a short-handed marker. St. Marys went back on top only three minutes into the final period on a rebound that eluded goalie Chris McCarthy. With five minutes remaining, remaining, Talotti was left alone in front, and was fed a pass from Jackman to tic the score. A low shot by Jackman only 58 seconds later gave St. Stephen's their first lead of lire game. St. Mary's pressed and managed to ring a backhand shot off the goalpost with less than two minutes to play. With their goalie pulled in die dying seconds, Talotti sealed the win with an empty-net empty-net goal with only 20 seconds seconds remaining. With an apparent lack of scoring punch, Jackman ad' mined to putting a little extra pressure on himself to carry die team offensively. "I think I do a littic," he said. "He (Father Bill) told me to use the team and if ' get a chance to score, then use it." Despite having only one game under their belts, coach Moloney is looking for his team to improve as the sea son rolls along. "I think we'll be as strong as last year, if not stronger,' he predicted. "The sky's the limit." Heritage House Wins The major atom Toro hock- ' ey players sponsored by the i ! Heritage House Restaurant ■" continue to maintain their win- ; ning style of hockey. During ; the week of October 12-19, • this team of talented 11-ycar- ; olds added three more wins to their record, bringing it to an ; impressive 9-1. Even more impressive, though, is the fact that in those last three wins, the major atom Toros were able to score a total of 14 goals while allowing ; only one! This low goals against average is to the credit of goaltenders Nick Adams and Greg Koenderman and the defence of Steve Ewlcs, Eric Griffin, Jason Knox, Colin MacDonald and Brett Pakosta. The first of three wins was earned on Saturday, October 12, when the Toro atoms faced Stouffville. The last lime these two teams competed, the game ended in a 3-3 draw. However, : the Toros demonstrated that they had no intention to settle for a tie this lime. When the final final buzzer sounded, Nick Adams Adams and Greg Koenderman boasted another shutout while the Toro forwards had scored six goals. Craig Sabine, Danny MacDonald, Chris Pot and John Armishaw each scored once, while Jason Lange had a pair. Assists on those goals went to: Danny MacDonald (3), Colin Colin MacDonald (2), and one each to Craig Sabine and Chris Pot. Two days later, on Thanksgiving Thanksgiving Monday, the Toro atoms atoms played an exhibition game against the Oshawa major atom Blackhawks. Due to the holiday, holiday, the Toros were without three of their players and, as a result, coach Lange had to juggle juggle his usual lines. As the Toro parents and fans have come to expect, his major atom players rose to the challenge and went on to defeat the Oshawa team 3-0. Nick Adams played the full game between the pipes to cam the shutout. One goal was scored in each period by Jason Lange, Chris Pot and Danny MacDonald. The following Saturday, a full Toro team played the major major atoms from Peterborough. Having previously defeated this team, the Toro atoms knew that Peterborough would play especially hard in an attempt to even the score. The Toro answer answer to this was to play even harder, which they certainly did. In this very aggressive, physical game, the Toro major atoms took immediate control of the scoreboard. Two minutes minutes into the opening period, Chris Pot scored on assists from Jason Knox and Chris McKenzie. Jason Lange doubled doubled the score with an unassisted unassisted goal in the final minutes of the period. Period two continued continued at the fast pace established in the first. Again, the efforts of the Toro forwards were rewarded rewarded with two more goals. Danny MacDonald scored with assists from John Amrishaw and Jason Lange, while Chris Pot recorded a goal with only 13 seconds left in the period. One last goal by Danny MacDonald MacDonald in the third period brought the final score to 5-1 for the Heritage House Toros. Again, congratulations players and coaches on your accomplishments to date. The parents and fans wish you luck in the upcoming tournament in Kitchener, in which teams from as far away as British Columbia Columbia have registered. The caliber of hockey will be tough, but you've shown that you are capable of playing top caliber hockey.
