Residents Remembered i .1 of tli /» K/frxmo T7iinnrii1 ("'hftnp.l Donelda Luxton After a month's illness, Donelda Luxton (Couch) died in Bowmanville on Sept. 27th, 1991. She was 87 years old. Born in Newcastle Village Village on May 14, 1904, she was the daughter of the late Winona and Henry Couch. On Oct. 28, 1924, she was married to Sidney Luxton, who predeceased her in 1985. She was educated in Newcastle. They lived in the Hendry apartments in Bowmanville until six years ago when she became a patient in Stratha- ven Lifecare Centre. A housewife, her interests interests centered around her family, friends and her church, St. Paul's United. Surviving Mrs. Luxton are sons, Harold, Earl and Bill, all of Bowmanville, 14 grandchildren and 23 great- f -andchildren. A daughter, mma Bromell, predeceased her in Nov., 1968. The complete funeral was held Sept. 30th in the Morris Morris Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. N. E. Schamerhorn conducting conducting the service and Mrs. Helen MacDonald providing appropriate music. Many floral tokens were received in her memory, including including donations to various charities. Funeral services were held at the Northcutt Elliott Funeral Home, Bowmanville on Friday, Friday, with the Reverend N.E. Schamerhorn officiating. The eulogy was given by his nephew nephew Charles Mead and a poem was read at the graveside by Reverend Schamerhorn. Pallbearers were Ken McQuarric, Gordon Heard, Bill Madill, LaVemc Heard, Charlie Mead, and Bob Johnson. Johnson. Six of the grandchildren were flower bearers. Graham On Friday, October 25, 1991, Fred Kimball Graham will receive the degree of Doctor Doctor of Philosophy at the Fall convocation of Drew University, University, Madison, New Jersey. He recently completed the program program in Liturgical Studies in the Theology Department of the Graduate School. Dr. Graham Graham currently resides in Toronto Toronto where he serves as Consultant Consultant for Congregational Worship for The United Church of Canada. His responsibilities responsibilities lie in the areas of architecture architecture and music, as well as educational and liturgical resources resources for worship. He travels widely to work with conference conference and presbytery leaders, and represents the church on several international committees. committees. Frederick Milton Samis The death of Frederick Mil- ton Samis occurred Tuesday, October 1, 1991, in Oshawa General Hospital, following a five week illness. He was in his 85th year. Son of the late Milton and Catherine Jane (Cole) Samis, he was bom in Darlington Township, and educated in Maple Grove and Bowmanville. Bowmanville. On November 21, 1942 he married Verna Marion Griffin. Griffin. A resident of Enfield for 57 years, he had previously resided resided in Maple Grove for 26 years. He was a self employed carpenter carpenter for 55 years, retiring eight years ago. A member of Kcdron United United Church, he served as an elder, elder, steward and trustee, and was on the maintenance committee committee of Enfield United Church, and on the parsonage board of Enniskillen United Church. He built many new homes and bams in the area, as, well as doing various renovations. renovations. He was predeceased by a sister Edithc Abcmcthy. Funeral services were held at the Morris Funeral Chapel, Bowmanville, on Friday, with the Reverend Elwyn Hughes officiating. Pallbearers were Messrs. Ivan Ormiston, Donald Prescott, Prescott, Allan Taylor, John Cat- ton, Floyd Lloyd, Donald Lee, Rod Simpson and John Schoondcrbcck. Queenie (Wrenn) Fletcher, died in Memorial Hospital, Bowmanville, Saturday, October October 12th, 1991, after a very short illness. She was in her 90th year. Queenie was born in the Village of Rye, England, on Jan. 8th, 1902, the daughter daughter of Edward Alfred and Agnes E. Wrenn. They came to Canada in 1912 and settled settled in Harmony where they resided until 1960. For some time, Queenie v/as the Harmony Harmony correspondent for The Oshawa Times and later for The Bowmanville Statesman. Statesman. In 1923, she and Kenneth R. Fletcher were married. He worked for General Motors. Motors. in Oshawa and retired in 1960. At varying times, they lived at several area locations, locations, attending Anglican churches in Newcastle, Bowmanville Bowmanville and Oshawa. They had three sons who survive, Keith, Toronto; Donald, Bowmanville and David Fletcher of Mortice, Michigan, Michigan, U.S.A. The funeral was held on Saturday from Northcutt El- ' liott Funeral Home to St. John's Anglican Church where Canon Byron Yates officiated. Son David Fletcher Fletcher read the lesson, son Keith gave the eulogy and the church organist and son Donald Fletcher (on violin) provided the funeral music. There were no pall bearers bearers as she was cremated with her ashes interred in Bowmanville cemetery. Floral tokens were received received from the Bowmanville Bowmanville Horticultural Society of which she was an active member. Gerald Albert Johnson The former commissionaire at Oshawa General Hospital for six and a half years, Gerald Albert Johnson, died in Memorial Memorial Hospital, Bowmanville, on Wednesday, September 4, 1991. In his 71st year, he had died suddenly, following a lengthy illness, retiring about 28 years ago, because of poor health. The son of Albert and Hat- tic Johnson, he was bom at Tory Hill in Haliburton County and educated at Tory Hill and Maihcson. On May 3, 1947, he was married to Y vomie Heard. He had resided for 44 years at 16 Lambs Lane, Bowmanville. During World War II he served for six years in Canada, the United Kingdom and in Europe, Europe, driving for the medical corps. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he remained cheerful during his long, painful painful battle with his health. Among his hobbies were woodworking and hunting and fishing with his sons. Left to mourn his passing are his wife Yvonne, daughter Hattie Rees, son Jerry and wife Linda,' daughter Edna Laugh- lin, sons Dennis and Glen and Wiarton lost a valuable citizen citizen with the recent passing of Dorothy Ewing on September 19,1991. Bom in Bowmanville, Ontario, Ontario, she received her early education education there, later graduating from Oshawa General Hospital School of Nursing. In July 1952, she moved to Sept-Ilcs, Quebec to pursue her nursing career. Bom in Bowmanville she married Jim Ewing in June 1953, and during the following two years, she was the head nurse at a Base Camp Hospital during the construction of the Quebec North Shore and Labrador Labrador Railway. She was also one of the forces behind the establishment establishment of St. Andrews United Church in Sept-Iles. In 1982, Dorothy was awarded the Order of Sancta Barbara by the Canadian Institute Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, in recognition of her work as nurse, wife, mother, and volunteer volunteer on many worthwhile projects projects in the mining community of Sept-Ilcs that has given her the distinction of being _ a steady source of hope and inspiration inspiration to those privileged to have known her. Prior to Dorothy's Dorothy's departure from Sept-Ilcs, she was honoured by the Girl Guides of Canada for her volunteer volunteer work within the district, and also by the local high school. Dorothy and Jim moved to Wiarton in July 1983 and she soon became involved in many volunteer organizations. President President of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Bruce Peninsula Health Care in 1990, she also designed designed the Nevada tickets sold by the Ladies Auxiliary to raise funds for new hospital equipment. In addition, she was President of the Women's Mission Society of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church and was involved in many other volunteer volunteer projects in Wiarton. Left to mourn her passing arc her husband Jim, daughter Diana, and son David, her stepmother, stepmother, Audrey Snowden, brother Bert Snowden of Bowmanville, Bowmanville, and sisters, Greta Down of Oshawa, Lorraine Petit, Petit, Gail Pickard, and Betty Lou Baker, also of Bowmanville. She was predeceased by her parents, Lloyd and Bessie Snowden, one sister Lillian and a brother, Stan. A funeral service was held at the George Funeral Home, Wiarton, September 21, 1991.
