■ t 10 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, Wednesday, November 27,1991 r By Brad Kelly The Definition of Lopsided You'll find this amusing. We thought it impossible that an area team could exist that was worse than the senior baseball team we toiled for in Newcastle for too many years. It was a nightmare. We prayed that some day the nightmare would end. It finally did, last season when the team folded. The Newcastle Lakers, unquestionably the worst team to play in the EOBA senior league for five years running, disbanded. We again prayed following the folding of the team, hoping that some day a team would come along that had worse results than ours. At the time, it was thought to be impossible. Thankfully, our prayers have been answered. There is a great similarity to the results we mustered mustered on the ball diamond, and the ones the women's women's basketball team at Durham College are post- ing. To put our baseball team into perspective, the league adopted a mercy rule a few years back. They didn't come out and say it, but we reasoned it was on account of us. Games would be called after seven innings if one team led by a margin of 10 runs or more. We never saw the eighth inning of a ball game. Still not satisfied, the league then adopted a curfew, curfew, allowing games not to exceed two-and-a-half hours. You'd be surprised at how many runs a team can score in that span of time. So, our team did make a difference in the league. Albeit, not one we are proud of. The Lady Lords of Durham College seem headed for the same fate. A couple of weeks ago, the Lady Lords ventured to New York for a weekend encounter with a couple of Division III schools. The game ball the U.S. schools used had rope bums on it from all the times it passed through the basket. They pounded Durham Durham by scores of 94-37 and 92-26. The game reports that were faxed to us from the college stated that Durham was definitely overwhelmed. overwhelmed. We think overwhelmed is putting it mildly. mildly. The Lady Lords returned home and prepared for their next two OCAA league games. Teams they should be competitive with. They lost both. The scores: 74-31 and 80-22. If that wasn't enough, we received a fax on Monday Monday announcing a promotion for games played last night (Tuesday) at the college. "Varsity Noise Maker Night" was deemed to help lead both women's and men's teams to victories over George Brown. A grand prize was to be award ed to the most original noise maker. Without attending the game, we have a pretty good hunch who might have walked off with the prestigious award: the women's team from George Brown. How more original can you get than the sound of the ball rippling the cords of the basket? In keeping with Durham's past results, we assume assume that the noise was loud and heard frequently. Hockin Drops Game To Port Hope Legion by Bob Sheridan We began a very eventful week Wednesday in Port Hope bowing to the Legion team there 7-5, after leading 54 late in the third period. David Green scored three for our side. Tony Jones and Ron Clemens Clemens scored the others. Again on Friday night it was David Green, playing at the peak of his offensive form with three beautiful goals. Joe Balson cashed in a perfect goalmouth pass from Irv Gill and George Sainsbury ripped a Tony Jones pass behind Don Fraser's outstretched arm. The only goal they weren't weren't able to meet was a victory. victory. But, that wasn't a top priority priority anyway. Vanier pulled out a 41-39 win on a game-winning basket basket with less than 10 seconds left in the game. Alas, however, the rest of our team never got their act in gear as our opponents, the Oshawa Antiques, edged us 13-5. Those two old masters, Tom O'Connor and Newt Woods, led the Antiques with two goals each. Tom scored a particularly canny goal when he took a rebound near the left circle. He faked a shot that created a pile-up on the unfortunate unfortunate goaltender, Art Hester, stepped nimbly to his left and picked the open side beautifully beautifully with a backhand. Jerry Johnston Johnston . contributed two more goals and Brian Bennett fired three. Singles were scored by Jack Snedden, Harry Wright, Paul Gibbons and Don Arscott. Don Arscott played a super game on defence as he outfoxed outfoxed several attempts to force' a cough-up in his own zone. We finally returned to form on Sunday as we deflected the Newcastle Flyers 4-3. On the first shift, Ron Clemens Clemens took a Sheridan pass in the slot and drove the puck under under Cam Wilson. Dean Avery had set up Sheridan on the play. The Flyers came back with three unanswered goals by Dave Harris (two) and Wayne Blanchard, Art Hester became unbeatable from this point on. Inspired by his brilliant brilliant goaltcnding, we buckled down and got. the job done. Bob Sheridan won a clean draw in the left hand circle and Ron Clcmcms scored his second second on a scaring drive again under Cam Wilson. Sandy MacDonald scored our third goal on a Tony Jones pass as lie swooped behind the goal and tucked the puck in the far side, It was the ubiquitous Sandy who fired the winner from ten feet out, assisted by Bob Hellam and Eddie Schry- cr. The third period was scoreless scoreless as persistent checking in both zones frustrated a determined determined Flyers attack. Vanier41 Courtice 39 It was a disappointing end to a well-played game by Courtice. Regardless of the outcome, coach Willems was pleased with the effort of his players this early in the season. season. "They worked hard, hustled hustled and played good defensively," defensively," praised Willems, who is in his first year as the coach of the team. "They need some work. There arc a lot of midgets on the team this year who haven't played man-to-man defence before. "I think we're going to have a quick team rather than a power team." The first couple of games will be a feeling-out process for Courtice. With a lot of new players in the lineup, they will be searching for a leader to step forward and take control of the team on the floor. Justin Parker appeared ready to assume the role on Monday. He controlled the Courtice offence, and displayed displayed a lot of poise in the later stages of the game, while the outcome was still in doubt. He finished the game as Courticc's top scorer with 11 points. Darcy Rowe had 7, while Todd McKinnon and Rob Vanlhinger chipped in with five each. The teams played as evenly evenly as the score indicates, with neither one being able to gain a lead of more than five points at any time during the game. Both teams opened the game with erratic shooting which resulted in a low- scoring opening quarter. Va- nier bettered Courtice by one at 7-6. The cautious play continued continued in the second quarter, with Courtice coming back to assume a 17-15 halftime lead. The goals Willems has set out for his team aren't translated translated into wins and losses. He's looking to improve both his team, and the future of basketball at Courtice. "We just want to be competitive competitive and work as a team," he began. "I want these guys to have fun. I want to teach them to play, so that it will help our program down the line. I want to teach them team spirit and to give all they have got. "If we win, we win, and if we lose, I want to teach them how to lose properly." Courtice were scheduled to play Bowmanvillc in an exhibition match yesterday (Tuesday). The game will be a tune-up for both teams as they prepare for a tournament Bowmanvillc will be hosting next weekend.
