In the last two minutes of the third period, Baltimore scored and then, in the last 40 seconds, poked in the winner, giving Young Drivers a heartbreaking loss. In the second game, Y oung Drivers played Grafton in a very exciting match. Grafton scored first in the middle of the first period and then again early in the second. Self Defence Course Responds to Increase in Crime Course Designed to Save Lives by Brad Kelly ' There arc 10 more people walking the streets of the Town of Newcastle who will be better prepared if they arc the victim of an attack. Thanks to a self-defence course conducted by Charles Kennish, those 10 people have a better understanding of how to save their life if they arc the victim of a violent violent crime. In this day and age, with violent crimes on the rise, you can't afford not to give some consideration to signing up for Kennish's course. "When they complete the course, they will have the confidence to control a situation situation that may get out of hand using simple techniques," said Kennish, who has 26 years of experience in karate and holds a 4th degree black belt. The course gives instruc- A&R Edges Durham TV On Saturday, November 30, A&R Flooring tykes edged out Durham TV, 4-2, needing an empty net goal to secure the win. Snowden Electric dominated dominated the game from the first period period to the final buzzer. An exciting first period found Snowden battling it out, ending with a 4-3 lead. Peter Gadd scored a pair of goals in the opening period, while Mike Talotti and Charlie Hargest had singles. Starting the excitement for the second period, from the faceoff, was Jesse Bouliannc, assisted by Peter Gadd and^ Jack Laverty. Jesse Bouliannc, Mike Talotti and Peter Gadd, short-handed, had the other goals in the period, For Gadd, it was his first hat-trick for the select team. lion on defence against any type of attack, including when a knife is involved. It also shows how to use a set of car keys or a handbag to your advantage during an attack. attack. The course is structured around the defensive moves that arc taught in karate. If students wish to further their development in self-defence, then becoming a member of the karate club at which Kennish Kennish is an instructor is the next logical step. In fact, a couple of the younger members of the self- defence course were seriously seriously considering joining the karate karate club for the next session. One of the students, Karen Fehr, a supply teacher in Bowmanville, signed up for the course to gain some confidence confidence in her ability to ward off an attacker. "Today, you read so much in the paper about what is happening, that I wanted to learn to protect myself the best way I could," she said. "This guy isn't easy on you," she said pointing at Kennish. "He puts you in realistic realistic situations. "I feel more confident and would suggest the course to everyone." Because it was the first time Kennish had operated a course of this type, he was apprehensive at first about the reception he might get from the students. Especially when trying to create a situation situation that appeared to be realistic. realistic. He wasn't long into the 10 week course before the students students removed any doubts he may have had regarding physical contact. "I learned that they wanted wanted to know all about self- defence," he said in reference reference to what the course taught him. "They wanted everything to be realistic, right from taking them down to holding them. "They wore interested in creating a situation where it would be realistic. They requested requested it and I felt I did it." It was evident from watching watching that those who signed up for the course were serious about learning how to defend themselves. The struggles and attacks they enacted were as close to the real thing as they could get. Weapons weren't used on this particular evening, but the course does touch on how to control a situation when a knife, for instance, may be used in an attack. The top priority, if faced with an attacker, is not to panic, regardless of how hard that may be at the time. Kennish referred to being in a restaurant, and being confronted with a situation where a patron may be choking choking on some food. If you panic, panic, the patron could lose their life. If you remain calm, and apply the Heimlich manoev- re, a life could be saved. The same could be said of being the victim in an attack. "Each situation is different, different, and you have to do whatever whatever you can," said Kennish. "The important thing is not to panic. Try and use what you've learned. There's always a way to control a situation. situation. "When you panic, you start to lose all sense of control." control." Kennish is hoping that the number of participants will increase to 15-20 for the next 10-week course that begins on January 28, and runs until March 31.
