They talk a lot about how great it is to be a child. They talk about die freedom and thq imagination and the spontaneity spontaneity of childhood. But they spend large parts of their time trying to gel kids to be everything everything but free, imaginative, and spontaneous. Sometimes, in fact, children children arc misunderstood and punished for being just what they arc - children. Why should we be all that surprised when children act childish. What do we expect? Even adults seldom act like adults. Ought we to demand the same behaviour out of children? Those are the sorts of questions that come to mind after watching the Bowman- ville Drama Workshop's production production of Jacob Two-Two Meets the Hooded Fang. This ambitious musical was presented last Friday and Saturday at the Bowmanvillc High School Auditorium. The talc is based on the novel by Mordccai Richlcr and the lyrics arc by Dennis Lee. That's the same famous Dennis Lee who wrote Alligator Alligator Pic. So, it's not too surprising that die rcsulting.script is funny, funny, but not without its serious side. It's a harmless quirk, but one which seems to get him into double trouble in a world where Jacob is being constantly punished for breaking rules that nobody bothers to explain. Jacob happens to break one of those rules and is promptly hauled before a biased judge and jury which passes judgement on him for committing the crime of being being a child. Then, he is whisked off to a horrid children's prison ruled by the monstrous "Hooded Fang" and his henchmen. It's a place where nobody has any fun at all. At the prison, he masterminds an escape arid manages to get away just in time to wake up and discover that the trial and jail were all a big nightmare and that his family really does love him. There's a lot going on in this two-hour production. The moral of the story is that there is wisdom and strength in children and a lot of childishness in adults. And it's probably up to each one of us to strike a healthy balance balance on adult and child sides of the ledger. But the job of discovering morals to stories is for adults. The really neat thing about this play is that it's fum It has a whole rainbow array array of costumes worn by people people playing a judge, a policeman, policeman, a fish, a bird, a fox, child-sized super-heroes, and the Hooded Fang.
