Newcastle Board of Educa- >% lion will be participating in _ the new memorial day on De- y* cembcr 6 designated by the federal parliament as a na- rational rational day of remembrance ( and action on violence y against women. -i'X It was on Dec. 6,1989 that Ha a gunman killed 14 female a students at Montreal's Ecole Polytechnique. "In remembrance of these women and to respect their efforts to succeed in non- traditional roles, we (the Northumberland and Newcastle Newcastle Board of Education)will lower our flag to half-mast on this date," said Dick Malow- ncy, Director of Education for the Board. In addition, Mr. Malow- ney said the board of education education will join "White Ribbon Week" which runs from Dec. 1 to 6 and will display a white ribbon on "our front door, as a symbol of the truce and the call for all people to lay down their arms as a show of commitment to nonviolence nonviolence between their brothers brothers and sisters." This special week is being promoted by Metro Men Against Violence and by York University and Men's Network. Mr. Malowney said all schools will be asked to participate participate in both the remembrance remembrance day and week and a package of suggestions for schools has been prepared. These include lowering school flags to half-mast and making daily announcements "on the issues of violence and acceptance of others." The board will also be honoring and remembering Jack MacLean who died recently. recently. Mr. MacLean, a senior senior citizen and a student in the creative writing class at the Brighton Centre for Individual Individual Studies, wrote a poem called "Dissipation" about the Montreal incident. "Jack was an engineer who always wanted to be a writer," Mr. Malowney said. "On Nov. 21, he was asked for his permission to distribute distribute his poem to the schools in our Board as part of our activities activities commemorating this remembrance day. Jack was thrilled at the prospect of having his work shared with other students." Dissipation by J. L. MacLean A mother's bitter moan of grief, A father's anguished whimper, A family weeping in disbelief; disbelief; At the senseless loss of a cherished daughter. Conceive if you can this sinister scene, On that fated December day; Of a crazed and murderous murderous Mark Lcpine, Stalking his female prey. Fourteen auspicious and ardent lives, Spitefully slain in their rise; What moral transgressions have led us to this, That our self-righteous conscience denies? The patience and pathos of man to mankind Must oer'eome the pique and the hate To find peace of mind, we must not be blind To what deference and love can create. We must give to our daughters our love and affection, affection, And the same to our sons, every one: To teach them regard for the reverence of life That justice and virtue be done.
