Sunday morning, the Toros met a beefed-up Agincourt Lions Lions and lost 2-1 in a hard- fought game. Stephen Hoar counted for the Bowmanville squad. It was a great tournament tournament for the Toros, but a very disappointing loss. A feature of the Pickering tournament was the exciting relay relay race on Saturday afternoon. In this event, the Toros' four of Nick Stacey, Andrew Smale, Stephen Hoar and Daryl Stock- man brought home the trophies. trophies. However, their participation left the Dennis Pizzeria squad a little short of manpower for most of an exhibition game at Darlington. Tyler Cook took a penalty and at 18 seconds of the first period, Lome Park of Mississauga jumped into a 1-0 lead. Sean Pudlis retaliated moments later, assisted by Ste-. phen Hoar. At 6:31 of the first, Daryl Stockman barreled his way past the opposition and scored. The Lome Park squad tied it up in the second. With the Toros playing four men short, the opposition was able to score two more in the third to win 4-2. Both Darren Powell and Ryan Ponto were called on to make some great saves. Monday, December 2 at Darlington, saw the Toros return return to league play, probably still stinging from Sunday's loss. From the opening faceoff, the Dennis Pizzeria ' team : showed they were ready to play, hemming Pickering in their own end for most of the first five minutes. Nick Stacey scored from Sean Pudlis on the power play. Less than a minute later, Nick scored unassisted. Finally Pickering woke up late in the first and Darren Powell was forced to make several good saves. In the second, Pickering scored on a deflection, but late in the period, Tyler cook scored from the point to end the period 3-1. This was to be Nick Stacey's Stacey's night. He fired one out to the point early in the third and Bobby Witheridge moved in and scored. Finally, midway through the third, Jay Henderson Henderson scored on a pass from Nick to end the scoring, 5-1 for the Toros. Two goals and two assists, assists, a great game for Nick. 401 Esso Oilers Win Three of Four Games Newcastle Aquatic Club Hosts Meet in November The 401 Esso Oilers travelled travelled to Grafton on December 7-8, and came away 'A' finalists, finalists, winning three of their four games. The first game was a tough contest against Cobourg's Tim Horton's. Cobourg took the lead early in the first, and made it 2-0 before the end of the period. The Oilers didn't give up and the rest of the game was all Esso, with six unanswered unanswered goals. Andrew Laton and Ryan McKnight notched two goals each, and centre Jamie Jamie Potter netted two and assisted assisted on two others. Luke Denison, Denison, Tyler Gibson and Kevin Kennedy also earned assists in the 6-2 win. 401 Esso next suited up against the team from Newcastle, Newcastle, and skated to a convincing 14-4 victory. Brock Baker made it 4-0 early in the third, with the assist to Ryan Davis. Geranium netted one with three minutes remaining to make the final score 4-1. 401 Esso met Family Trust in the 'A' championship, in what proved to be a real nail- biter. Family Trust took the early lead, but Esso replied to tic the game before the end of the first with a goal by Brock Baker, assisted by Fraser McArthur. The action was end- to-end in the second, but both goaltcnders were hot and neither neither team was able to connect. The Oilers worked hard and had their chances. But, with six minutes remaining, Family Trust made it 2-1. They went on to score two more for a final final score of 4-1. Gravel Crew Ties at 4 by Kim Gadd Sunday, December 8, found Bowmanville's Sand & Gravel in Oshawa playing an exhibition exhibition game -against the North Minister Church team in what turned out to be a 4-4 tie. Sand & Gravel got off to a slow start and was behind 4-1 at the end of the first period. Bowmanvillc's goal was scored by Charlie Hargest, assisted assisted by Brian Beitlc. On Saturday, November 30, the Newcastle Aquatic Club hosted a distance meet that allowed allowed swimmers the opportunity opportunity to compete in events of distances of 400m, 800m, or 1500m. The meet was the first run by the club that catered to the more serious or experienced swimmer, and it attracted representatives representatives from Port Hope Aquatic Club, Richmond Hill Aquatic Club and Woodbridge Aquatic Club. Special mention must be made of Mike James' 1500m freestyle. At approximately 350m, a head-to-head collision with a competitor broke Mike's nose and yet he wouldn't stop. In fact, he held his split limes so completely steady that it is impossible to tell from them when the impact took place. He did complain afterwards afterwards that the taste of blood in his mouth was a little dis concerting. The second half of our meet weekend was geared to the newer athlete. The NEWAC Sprint Meet was open to swimmers swimmers with *C' times and below. Port Hope, Ajax and Richmond Richmond Hiil attended the competition competition along with our novice, senior B and junior swimmers. Our swimmers were very competitive and placed 35 of our 50 swims in the top six. NEWAC also entered three relay relay events and won them all. The top performer was Diana Diana Moriarity who, in her second second career meet, swam four events and placed first in all of them. Other top six placements were turned in by: Christine Dymarski, Sarah Fehn, Robin Limcbccr, Chris Frisina, Kristy Hamilton, Luke Dragstra, Rick Weiss, Scott Bouwmccster, Brian Dymarski, Lordcle Gree- nyer.
