Cartwright High School, located in Blackstock, breezed through the round robin portion of the tournament tournament undefeated. In the finals, finals, they were untested as they won easily, 7-2, over Clarke. St. Mary's, who posed little little opposition to anyone, and Clarke High School, rounded out the four-team tournament. A pair of power play goals in the third period enabled Cartwright to stretch the 4-2 lead they had built over Clarke after two periods. They scored only 13 seconds seconds into the final frame, and connected again 42 seconds later. While enjoying a two- man advantage three minutes later, they notched their seventh seventh goal. Even without the third period period goals, the outcome wasn't in question. Clarke just didn't have the firepower to match their opponents. "They had a lot of talent and they deserved the victory," victory," said Clarke coach, John Skovsgaard. The game did get chippy in the later stages, as both teams engaged in shoving matches after the whistle. Cartwright were the more aggressive, aggressive, and it cost them a couple of ejections. Skovsgaard also noted that, despite the margin of victory, he was pleased with the level of sportsmanship his team displayed in die later stages of the game. Cartwright, on the other hand, showed very little class once they had the game under control. One player who was ejected in the later stages, taunted Clarke players by riding riding his stick in Dave 'Tiger' Williams fashion as he exited the ice. Nobody posed a threat to Cartwright during the round robin. They pounded St. Mary's 13-1, and followed with a 5-2 win over Clarke. St. Stephen's and Clarke also scored convincing wins over the hapless team from St. Marys, 5-1 and 5-3, respectively. respectively. In the semi-final game be tween Clarke and St. Stephen's Stephen's to see who would face Cartwright in the finals, as in past games between the two schools, little was decided. The teams played to a 1-1 tie, and needed a shootout to determine a winner. Three pucks were placed at centre ice and one player from each team took the penalty shots. Both players scored once. To break the tie, they reverted reverted to a stopwatch to see who was the fastest in completing completing the shots. Clarke advanced.' advanced.' "It could have been us out there. That's how close it was. That is the frustrating part," said St. Stephen's coach, Father Bill Moloney as the final game was being played. "I'm fairly happy with the way we played today. Cartwright Cartwright is a very strong team." Cartwright is a member of the LOSSA boys' high school league that operates in Oshawa. They have been a surprise to the rest of the league, pulling off wins in their first three games. Father Bill Moloney presents members of Cartwright High School with the championship trophy after they defeated Clarke, 7-2, in the finals of the annual St. Stephen's tournament held on December 4 at the Orono Arena. *76e fauundteut StatetoKwc Athletes of the Year Just who are the best male and female athletes in the Town of Newcastle?
