I Section Two The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, December 11,1991 7 Education Bowmanville High School News Every week I try to show a different aspect of life at BHS. However, the next week and a half before Christmas is going to be very hectic, so I decided to use this space to let everyone everyone know what exactly is going going on. We are right in the middle of the second Spirit Week of the year. Every day this week is packed full of fun-filled, spirit-including activities, ending ending on Friday with the third annual annual Christmas in the Caribbean Caribbean dance, to be put on by BHS' own Dave Rice and Jim Marshall. Marshall. Tomorrow is also the day that we kick off our big fund raising event for this year. After After taking a survey a , few months ago, we decided that chocolate covered almonds were the way to go. After searching high and low for the best deal, fundraising minister Laura Russel has ordered us 300 cases of chocolate covered almonds. That works out to approximately approximately 9600 boxes or roughly 480,000 chocolate covered almonds. That's a lot of almonds! We arc depending on the community to support us by buying the almonds when one of our many dedicated dedicated students comes trudging through the snow on their Christmas vacation and asks you to please make a purchase. You might even want to buy two; they're really great almonds. almonds. The money that we raise is going to go towards the phys. ed. department, who can always use some more money to take school teams to other schools, the music department needs money as does the drama drama department who are going all out this year to put on the best performance of West Side Story ever. At the request of one of the vice-principals, we are also looking into making a donation to a children's wish foundation that grants the wishes of chronically ill children. children. Bowmanville Audio- Vision has offered to let the students' council have a ghetto blaster with a double cassette and CD player at a greatly reduced reduced price to be given to the student who shows excellence in the selling of chocolate covered covered almonds. Preparation for the Christmas Christmas Concert is also well under way. On Friday, December 20th, the students will come down to the auditorium in two groups, one in the morning the other in the afternoon, to watch the brave students who have signed up to perform in the concert, do their thing. Tyler Gibson, the minister of social ~? affairs, is organizing the concert concert and we hope that it will be as big a success as it has been in past years. That's all I have to say this week. Things have been hopping at Central School this year. The first term was the busiest ever! Early in the fall our students students participated in interschool interschool soccer and harrier. Now, athletes from Central are diligently working on their volleyball volleyball skills at early-morning practices. Once again the Central School band participated enthusiastically enthusiastically in the Santa Claus parade. We're all proud of these young people who spend their lunch hours making music. Christmas is coming, and so is that special week when everyone gathers each day to sing carols and enjoy short skits and recitations from various classes. The highlight highlight of the week will be the musical presentation "Santa's Double Trouble" by students from Mrs. Collins' and Mrs. Walters' classes. This energetic energetic group has also agreed to stage a special presentation for the Bowmanville Public Library. Library. Everyone at Central appreciates appreciates the great support we enjoy enjoy from our parents and the community. Our fundraising, co-ordinated by our parent committee and Mr. St. John, is complete. In addition, Central School students collected over four hundred dollars for UNICEF this year. Thank you Mr. Homyak and grade three for counting and rolling all those coins. We look forward to our annual annual Book Fair to be held from December 11th to 13th in the library, where lots of good Christmas presents are sure to be found. As if that weren't enough, our hard-working parents parents committees has begun to organize not lunches as periodic periodic treats. The pizza was delicious! delicious! At Central we believe that we learn through shared experiences. experiences. We are lucky to be able to walk across the street to Bowmanville Museum and around the comer to the Bowmanville Bowmanville Public Library. Many of our classes visit both places regularly. Just ask anyone in Mrs. Falls' class about the museum's museum's long and interesting history! Mr. Duval's grade six class had a wonderful day at Ontario Place, where they saw the film, "The Blue Planet" and at the Ryerson Theatre, where Sherlock Sherlock Holmes solved the mystery mystery of "The Hound of the Baskervilles." That trip was followed closely by an excursion excursion to Kleinburg in which Mrs. Walters'-class and Mrs. Collins' class' were able to study the extensive collection of Canadian Art. The busiest classes, of course, are the kindergartens, who have already paid several visits to local establishments, ranging from the apple orchard and pumpkin patch to the bakery, bakery, the pet store and veterinary veterinary office. Tiny ghosts and gobblins were delighted to show off their costumes at Mamwood on Hallowe'en. As you can see, education, fun and shared learning are continuous at Central Public School.
