1 w Ribbon Cutting Opens New Fire Safety House The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, January 15,1992 21 by Peter T. Sum id * Bom in Courlicc and given the name Danellc in a ceremony ceremony at Bowmanville, the Town of Newcastle Firefighters' gift to the children of Durham Region Region officially came into being last week. Mayor Diane Hamrc cut the ribbon during an outdoor ceremony ceremony at the Bowmanville Recreation Recreation Complex and declared the Fire Safety House open. "It's very nice. I think they should let me rent it as my apartment,' the mayor confided jokingly to Newcastle's Fire Chief Mike Creighton after a guided tour of the two-storey miniature house atop a trailer chassis. ' Captain Trent Elyca of Fire Station Number Four says the Region's first Fire Safety House was given the name of a girl who did not live past age two weeks. The only daughter of Station Station Number Four firefighter Owen Ferguson and his wife, Connie, died as full-and part- time firefighters of Newcastle were constructing the house in their spare time. "The boys got together and though it'd be appropriate to dedicate this (the house) to Da- j nolle," says Elyea, one of two firefighters who initiated the project of constructing the house. The Fergusons have three sons. Tim Calhoun of Fire Station Number One in Bowmanville conceived the idea from a November November 1990 magazine article. After discussing it with Elyca, Elyca, the idea was brought to Chief Creighton's attention. "Go for it," Calhoun recalled recalled what the chief told him and Elyea toward the end of 1990. "See if you can get funding funding started," Creighton said. ' "Early in 1991 we had a meeting with McDonald's and they agreed to give us five grand," Calhoun said last Wednesday as he, Elyea and other firefighters were in Station Station Number Four, putting last -minute touches on the house- ailer "and " a- vintage- GMC truck that was to tow the house to the Recreation Complex from the fire station. Construction of the house began early last October and was completed a couple of weeks ago. Sixty-five commercial and business houses aside from numerous numerous private individuals as well as full-and part-time fire- fights contributed what they could toward the construction of the house. "If someone were to ask me today to build one for him I'd say it would cost him $40,000," Elyea said when asked to put a price tag on the house. The house is a scaled-down version of a residential home with a living room, kitchen and bedroom area, complete with television and VCR, mock stove and bed and a sophisticated sophisticated security alarm system. "The purpose of the house is to train children in emergency emergency procedures in the event of a fire-related crisis in and around the home," Calhoun says. "The students will be taught everything from care, maintenance maintenance and testing of smoke detectors, detectors, to escape procedures in the event of fire." The Fire Safety House is jointly owned by the Newcastle Newcastle Professional Firefighters Association Local 3139 and the Corporation of the Town of Newcastle. It's available to schools around Ontario. A memo to firefighters circulated circulated late last October said Durham's education boards would print pamphlets on the Fire Safety House, describing its chores. It also said that the board's principals had been appointed appointed to a special committee to help design "a workable program program for tours" by the mobile house across the region. Ward Two Regional Councillor Councillor Ken Hooper described the miniature house as "a good piece of work." "Firemen need to be congratulated. congratulated. They've hit on something here that should be a winner," he said. Until a permanent site is found the 3,180-kilogram house-trailer will call Fire Station Station Number Four it's birthplace birthplace on Trull's Rd. north of Highway 2 home. Hampton / by Michelle Balson Even though we arc well into winter, it's easy to forget. There really hasn't been much snow. I'm sure the sno.wmobil- ers have been wishing for snow, and for it to stay. Their well oiled machines sit waiting, waiting, ready to glide across the snow at the turn of a key. There are a few that are too anxious. A snowmobiler died after crashing through the ice on Lake Simcoe this weekend. It is unfortunate. Please take heed. You should always check with the proper authorities authorities on ice conditions. There are a few spots if you are out driving that arc suitable for outdoor skating. Enniskillen Enniskillen Conservation Area is offering offering horse drawn sleigh rides later this month, if the weather co-operates. One thing's for sure, you don't need snow to play cards. Wednesday's Euchre Card Party Party had its first meet this year. Leona Wright took first place honors with a score of 91. Verna Verna Robinson was second with 87. Not far behind was Dorothy Dorothy Beech-with 86.. Fred Griffin Griffin and Meta Swain tied for fourth with 81. The Most Honest Honest Player was Ruby Cochrane. Anna Bragg was the guest speaker. Jane thanked everyone for coming. The meeting was opened with the singing of the Institute Ode. Jane read a verse, "The Opening of a New Year". The Roll Call of "My farthest journey from home," was taken. Most of the ladies are well travelled. The minutes were read and approved. It was noted that there is a meeting for the President and District Director of each branch on Monday, January 13th. They observed how the farmers there grow their crops in strips because of the water shortage. They do not use machines. Everything is done by hand. The food was interesting and the bathrooms were primitive. We all enjoyed her talk very much and could have listened and watched for hours. It was all very interesting. interesting.
