I 10 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, Wednesday, January 22,1992 Lt'.x By Brad Kelly The Town Deserves A Triple 'A' Team Last week's news of Bowmanville joining 20 other other centres in Central Ontario to form a 'AAA' hockey hockey zone came as no surprise. Talks of forming the new Central zone have been ongoing since September. September. What came as a surprise, was that the 21 centres could reach an agreement to form such an association. association. Centres, who for years have battled each other through regular season play and took turns eliminating eliminating one another in playoffs, can be amiable. "For awhile I didn't," answered Bowmanville's OMHA representative, Terry Lynch, when asked if he thought an agreement between all of the centres would be reached. "Once Terry Ferguson and Kelly Doyle got involved, I knew they had the drive and I could see it starting to happen." The two catalysts behind the formation, Ferguson Ferguson and Doyle, are both from Lindsay. Nothing has been confirmed, but it is a good bet that the 'AAA' midget team will be based there, where an affiliation affiliation with the Central Ontario Lindsay Jr. B's is likely. In addition to Bowmanville, the other centres include include Stouffville, Cobourg, Woodville, Little Britain, Britain, Lindsay, Ops, Omemee, Fenelon Falls, Hali- burton, Uxbridge, Port Perry, Sunderland, Cannington, Oakwood, Newcastle, Orono, Manvers, Bobcaygeon and Minden. Nine teams, ranging in age from novice through midget, will wear the OHL Sudbury Wolves' colours of blue, white and silver. The teams will adopt the Wolves' nickname. None of this is carved in stone, yet. It's all pending pending approval by the OMHA. Some of the centres involved in the formation of the Central zone were actively seeking affiliation with established 'AAA' centres. Because the OMHA wants a 'AAA' centre to have a population of no more than 150,000, centers seeking an affiliation were denied. The biggest question that remains to be answered answered by the organizers of the new zone is the question of where the various teams will be located. With Lindsay almost a lock for the midgets, that leaves eight other teams looking for a home. The deciding factor in who gets what team, and how many teams they get, is the availability of ice time. Bowmanville, with its new Recreation Complex, deserves one of those teams. "The key is the availability of ice time," said Lynch, adding that available ice time will dictate whether Bowmanville, Newcastle or Orono is granted granted a team. "The schedules will likely be made in August, so we'll need ice confirmed by July." Lynch has applied for one of the nine teams to be located in Bowmanville. Which team that is, he is reluctant to disclose at this time. Cost and travel are a couple of the downfalls of the new 'AAA' affiliation. The Eastern Ontario 'AAA' loop, which the Central Ontario teams will enter, is comprised of Oshawa, Quinte, Richmond Hill/Vaughn, York/Simcoe, Markham, Pickering/ Ajax, Whitby, Peterborough and Kingston. "It will allow the boys who want to go to a higher level, to go," said Lynch of the benefits for players in the Town of Newcastle. The trickle effect will be felt through the Toro system, as some of the better players move on. The overall talent of each team will weaken. It has to. And the BRHL will quite likely be affected. Some of their better players may choose to try out for the Toros. And we ran out of room to discuss the bidding war for ice time. They paid the price with just over three minutes left, when the Nepean team broke out from their own end and scored their third goal.
