Women's Institute Meets in January Providcncc-Shaw's Women's Women's Institute met on Thursday, January 16, 1992, at the home of Barbara Woods, with 22 members in attendance. President Marilyn Dow welcomed welcomed everyone and then opened the meeting with the singing of the Ode. The minutes minutes of the December meeting were read and the Treasurer's report was given. Wc were reminded that June 1992 is to be W.I. month. The roll cal was answered by naming a song with the word smile in the title. Surprising how many different ones were given. Our guest speaker, Irene Konzclmann, was introduced by Marilyn Dow. This was to be a light-hearted meeting and our speaker held to that theme by speaking on "humour". Wc were reminded that too much stress makes you ill and that Vitamin H - (humour) was readily available, anywhere at any cost and 'can be applied to all pains. Humour gives us relief relief while laughter increases our heart beat and improves blood pressure. Humour has to be experienced and smiles open the way for conversation. To live a happier, healthier life don't let stress get you down. Annabelle Rickard thanked the speaker for this humorous and entertaining address and presented presented her with a gift. Canadian Club Meets Feb. 12 The Canadian Club of Durham Durham Region will be meeting on Wednesday, February 12, at the Holiday Inn, Oshawa, starting starting with dinner at 6:30 p.m. Guest speaker will be Dr, Fred Edgecombe. His speech is entitled "How Many R's In Garbage?" (Garbage and The Environment). Dr. Fred Edgecombe Edgecombe is Executive Director of the Environment and Plastics Institute of Canada (EPIC), an organization recently established established by the plastics industry to address the issue of plastics in the environment throughout Canada. Dr. Edgecombe joins EPIC after a successful 25-year career career in the plastics and chemical chemical industries. Most recently he served as Technical Director for the Society of the Plastics Industry of Canada (SPI) and over a 20-year period he held a number of senior positions at DuPont Canada Inc., including Manufacturing and Planning Manager, Plastics. A native of Newfoundland, he has a PH.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Cambridge and B.Sc. in Honours Physics and Chemistry Chemistry from the University of Western Ontario. Local services services arc organized by ecumenical ecumenical committees in thousands of communities across Canada, with each church taking a turn to host the annual service. The offerings from the services arc used to provide study and worship worship resources, to cover costs of printing and distributing the services, and to support ecumenical ecumenical projects in Canada and abroad. The service in this area will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 6 in St. John's Anglican Church, Temperance St., Bowmanville. Bowmanville. Graduate by Laura J. Richards Jake Binncma, the pastor of Maranalha Christian Reformed Reformed Church, is a former physics teacher who became ordained as a minister in 1986. "A number of reasons pulled me towards theology," recalled Mr. Binncma. One of those reasons had to do widt the relationship "Humans were placed not superior to the earth but as care-givers," said Mr. Binncma. Binncma. Happy Birthday Mrs. Denise Warren (Challice) Mrs. Denise Warren (nee Challice) recently graduated from the Ontario Health Care Services, in Peterborough. Peterborough. She received the "Al- sheimer Award" at the graduation graduation exercises January 23, 1992 at Kenner Collegiate. Mrs. Warren in the daughter daughter of Orville and Isabelle Challice of Orono, and is a former Clarke High School graduate. Currently he is working on making sure that Christians in this area know about the Mar- anatha Christian Reformed Church. "I've been here for five months and the Church doesn't have a high profile. "I would like the church to have a healing influence on the community," he added. Presently, a number of programs arc offered not only to Church members but also to others in the community. One of these is a Friday night Bible Study for children. children. "Children from all congregations congregations are involved. Wc also have a Christian Mothers' group called Moms At Home." The Church organization doesn't stop with spiritual needs. "Physical needs will not be overlooked," explained Mr. Binncma as he discussed how the church members have become involved in the food drives organized by the Salvation Army.
