U The Karate Kid" Leads to Black Belt Rankings The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, February 5,1992 9 by Brad Kelly Despite the disparity in their ages, Gilbert Loncrgan and Paul Murdoch have more in common than just being members of the Maple Leaf Karate Club. One particular particular night last week, close to 30 members were being put through a strenuous training session. With the increased awareness awareness in self-defence, the head instructor at the club, Charles Kcnnish, has noticed an increase increase in his membership. "A lot are getting getting involved for the self- defence aspect and because of the conditioning." Kcnnish was also beaming about the self-defence course he oversees at the Recreation Complex on Tuesday nights. In the fall session, which represented represented the first time the course was offered, 10 interested interested participants joined. That number increased to 14 for the current session. The kick' Yesterday's Heroes 50 YEARS AGO -- The high school basketball season started for Bowmanville when three BHS teams travelled to Port Hope. BHS junior boys won 23-18. Bill Edger with 10 points and Don Ferguson with seven were high scorers for BHS. Eric Mcll- veen had four and Tom Cowan seven. The senior : girls' game ended in a 10-10 tie. Helen Wright scored the majority of points for Bowmanville. In the junior girls' game, Georgia Gibson scored 12 for BHS in a 16-9 victory. The ; Saturday morning game in the three team high school hockey league between Scott Densem's team and Don Allin's resulted in a 1-1 tie, played for the most part in a heavy snowstorm. After the first period, good hockey was impossible in the deep snow and both teams were content to call it a draw. 35 YEARS AGO -- In recreation play, the Barons stretched their undefeated string to fivé games by defeating the Bears 3-1 in the atom league. Newcastle Oldtimers Lose to Bowmanville by Robert E. Stiles The Newcastle Oldtimers hosted the Bowmanville Kinks on Sunday, February 2, and lost by a 5-4 score. Frank Devcreaux led the Kinks' attack with three goals. Newcastle had defeated the Kinks 19-9 on January 15 in Bowmanville. Newcastle had four players, Dave 1 Roote, Phil Fox, Grant Flintoff and Sandy McDonald, with one goal and one assist each. Jim Jones contributed two assists while George Sainsbury had one assist. The Kinks' scoring was handled by Tony Belmonte and J. Kolff with two assists each. Howie Pollard and J. Mara had one goal each, with K. Rowe and Carmen Sargent collecting one assist each. The first period saw the Kinks take a 2-0 lead on goals by Frank Dcvereaux and Howie Howie Pollard's unassisted tally. Newcastle got one back before the period ended. It came from Dave Roote, assisted by Phil Fox and Jim Jones to end the period 2-1. The second period saw Newcastle come back with three goals by Grant Flintoff, Sandy McDonald and Phil Fox to take a 4-2 lead. On Saturday at a National National Gymnastics meet held at the Winstonette Gymnastics Club in Markham, Conahan, a member of the Gemini Gymnastics Club of Oshawa, placed first overall in the National Dpen category.
