Avril qualified to compete in the preliminary ladies event, along with 12 other competitors competitors and she skated to a second place finish and a silver medal. Avril's home club is the Port Perry Figure Skating Club and she is coached by Hilary Simpson. This past year has proven to be a very rewarding year for this 11 year old skater as she has passed her preliminary preliminary figure in Dec. 1991 and has also received her preliminary preliminary dance and now, a silver medal. Congratulations Avril on a job well done, Keep up the good work! A Birthday Celebration Kyle Walker of Scugog Point, celebrated his ninth birthday on Feb. 10, 1992 with family and friends on Saturday, Saturday, 15. Nestleton Presbyterian Church An average attendance at Nestleton Presbyterian Church on Sunday, Feb. 16, at 11 a.m. conducted by Rev. Wm. Fair- ley with Shirley Scott playing the hymns. Responsive Psalm No. 1, and scripture reading Jeremiah 17 and Luke 6. In the sermon, Rev. Wm. Fairley spoke on the making of decisions in our lives we receive receive guidance in the familiar Biblical passages as "Come Unto Me All Ye That Labour, and I Will Give Y ou Rest." A happy time of fellowship followed the service with a luncheon for Mr. Stan McNcc- ly - who will be. 91 years young on Feb. 19. He graciously graciously thanked everyone for such a delightful surprise in his honor. Perhaps because it really was a cold morning. Some complained complained about the church being cold, but I think if was so many openings of the outside door before church started. After After Reverend Sedgwick opened the service our first lesson was Luke 5: 1-11 about the four disciples fishing all night and catching no fish. Jesus met them at the shore, this is where Jesus calls the first Disciples and later they filled their boats with fish. Elizabethvillc Women's Institute Institute met on Tuesday the 4th at Sybol Van de Wall's home here in the village. We had 10 attending. Our president, Irene Beatty had just returned from B.C. seeing her new granddaughter granddaughter and her parents. Since we are coming up to the end of our year, reports were given also questions that were discussed at the meetings such as whether we still wanted wanted to have our area conventions conventions at the Royal York and other questions we answered. New By-law To Restrict All Firearms The Town of Newcastle is taking aim at persons who discharge firearms too close to roads, residences, and shorelines. And the proposed new regulations envisaged by the municipality would include crossbows, long-bows, air guns, and spring guns, in addition addition to the more traditional firearms. The by-law governing t weapons in the municipality was introduced on Monday during a meeting of. the town's general purpose and administration committee. However, it was referred back to staff for additional review review after a representative of the Ministry of Natural Resources Resources outlined some concerns concerns over a clause in the document governing minimum minimum distance between the person discharging a firearm and the lake. Other portions of the bylaw bylaw note that no person shall discharge any weapon at any location in die Town of Newcastle Newcastle which is within 100 metres from any parcel of land which is zoned residential residential by the zoning by-law. The rules also prohibit the discharge of a weapon within 50 metres of a highway if the direction of the shot would intersect or run parallel to the highway. One of the favorite favorite stops was in room 201, where marshmallow krispie treats were being made. Jennifer, Christine, Emily and Roxanne decorated their masteipicce with red smarties in the shape of a heart. Building Stats Up in January In Newcastle Statistics from die municipal municipal planning department show that building permits for projects valued at just over $13 million dollars were obtained in January. In January of 1991, only $627,800 worth of construction construction activity had been undertaken. undertaken. According to the first building progress report for 1992, residential construction accounted for almost all of the construction activity. Permits for 13,017,000 worth of residential construction construction were issued. Permits were issued for $35,000 worth of activity classified as "industrial" construction. A total of 164 housing starts were recorded in January. January. The homes under construction construction were chiefly in Bowmanvillc and Courtice. There were 116 housing starts in Bowmanvillc last month; 46 in Courtice and 2 in Ncwcasde Village. January's building spurt brought the municipality $104,552 in permit fees.
