i 8 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, Wednesday, February 19,1992 Impressive Season for St. Stephen's Volleyball Team by Brad Kelly The beat hasn't remained the same for the girls' junior volleyball team at St. Stephen's Stephen's High School. No, these ladies walk to the beat of their own drum. Despite being bumped from 'A' to 'AA' competition this year, the team has responded responded the same way as it has in previous seasons. It's posted nothing but wins. Their match record sits at 31-9. "I'd hoped we would be," said coach Dave Quigley when asked if he felt his team could be competitive with the increased level of competition. competition. "We haven't had as much practice time this year as I would have liked, though." A lack of practice time is the only tiling this club has lacked this year. With three girls' volleyball and three boys' basketball teams operating operating at the same lime, availa ble gym space is at a premium. premium. But, despite the lack of court time, die transition to 'AA' volleyball has been a smooth one. They have won tournaments at Norwood and I.E. Weldon. Today (Wednesday) (Wednesday) they arc participating in the Kawartha finals at Port Hope. Their sights are set on the COSSA championships at Adam Scott slated for February February 26. Last year, as a midget entry, entry, they finished second in Central Ontario. With the increased calibre of competition, they haven't been able to rest on their laurels laurels from last year. Even with their reputation for being a powerhouse, complacency hasn't set in. "We didn't get a chance to get complacent," explained explained Quigley. "A lot of the teams we have played are very strong and more physi cal than we arc. We've had to play hard all season." Quigley credits the improved improved offensive play of Michelle Michelle Eccles and Cara Gil- fooy for his team's success this season. He also singled out Brianna McGuire for stepping to the forefront le take on a leadership role with the club. Add lire ingredients of their past success and confidence confidence in their abilities, and you have the makings of a high school dynasty. "The girls arc much more relaxed and concentrating not on their skills, but positioning," positioning," said Quigley. "When we're on defence, the other team has no place to put the ball because of our improved positioning." Quigley hopes die position the team takes in the future is a spot at die OFSAA championships. championships.
