\ 10 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, Wednesday, March 25,1992 CTC Major Peewees Win Trenton 'A' Championship Extra Skating Offered During March Break by John Hand The Canadian Tire major peewees travelled to Trenton on March 14-15 to lake part in the annual Golden Hawk tournament tournament and came away with the championship. Torus 1 Belleville 1 The Toros' dominance in this game was not reflected in the final score, but they had to come from behind to salvage the tie on a goal by Paul Laval- lee, assisted by Kevin Pickcll. Toros 6 Trenton 6 The Toros came out strong in this game, jumping out to a three-goal lead in the first four minutes. The home team came storming back, though, and the first period ended 4-3 for the Toros. The Trenton team scored three goals in the second second to lead 6-4. The Toros needed goals by Lavallcc and Greg McMurtcr, the last one coming with just 1:03 left, to clinch the tic. Goal scorers were: Lavallcc ' (2), McMurtcr, Jason McLean, Eric Zuvic, Nick Hand. Assists went to: Ryan Latimer, Ryan Dunnigan, Hand, Pickcll, Lavallée. Lavallée. Toros 8 Cedar Hill 0 Sunday morning found the Toros at their very best with their defence of Kevin Pickcll, Jason McLean, Steve Brink- man, Mall Brake and Derek Lange, more than a match for the Cedar Hill forwards. The match was marred by an ugly incident midway through the final period which resulted in a Cedar Hill player being ejected for kicking. Derek Lange also suffered a concussion and was taken to hospital. Goal scorers were: McMurt- cr (4), Lavallee (2), Zuvic, Dunnigan. Nick Hand opened the scoring after just 34 seconds of play by stealing the puck at his own bluelinc ■ and skating in alone on the Belleville keeper. Paul Lavallcc made it 2-0 before before the end of the period. The Toros scored three more times in the second to pul the game out of reach. Three unanswered goals in the third period on Sunday night gave Lumber a comc- from-behind 5-2 win over Tennant Heating in their bcsl- of-five final. The victory was the second in a row for Lumber, Lumber, who can clinch the scries in game three on Sunday night. They took game one of the series in overtime, 5-4. Sunday's win in game two was the fourth in a row in the playoffs for Lumber. After dropping the first game of the semi-final to Johnson Excavation, Excavation, they stormed back with a pair of wins to advance advance to the finals. For Tennant Healing, their next loss will be their last of the season. They headed into the finals on a roll after sweeping past Gruffics in their semi-final in two straight games. They now need three straight wins to become champions. Roger Yates was the offensive offensive sparkplug for Lumber on Sunday night as he scored a pair of goals, including the game winner. Tied at 3-3 with just under four minutes to go in die game, Yates was on the receiving receiving end of a beautiful three-way passing play and slid a quick shot past Tennant goalie Scott Bates. The power play goal was all the cushion that Lumber would need for the win. Brad Rushak added an insurance marker with 34 seconds left when he backhanded a shot that travelled the length of the ice and into an empty net. Aaron Ulrich and Willie McGarvcy had the odicr Lumber goals. Darcy Huber, Alf Tennant and Mark Smith tallied once apiece in a losing cause for Tennant. Like the first game of the scries, Sunday's tilt was close throughout.' Yates potted his first goal of the night early in the first, and Ulrich added to it later when his slapshot from the top of the circle made it 2-0. Huber cut the lead in half when his ,pass from behind the net hit a defenceman in front and bounced into the net past a 1 , startled Lumber goalie, Wes Best. Many of the area's kids and adults took advantage of the extra skating times during during last week's March Break. The skating was just one of the many events that the Town of Newcastle Community Services Department organized. Goal number one was for the Snowden team when A1 McCullough poked in the rebound rebound from Scott Millar and Tyler Pincy. Oshawa NASC lied the game early in the scc- ' ond period. Great sportsmanlike game, guys! On March 20-22, the Optimist Optimist Club tyke selects of the BRHL travelled to Flint Michigan Michigan and won two out of three. In their first game on Friday, Friday, the Hawks took on South London and came away with a hard-fought 1-0 win. Jamie Bryant one-tiined Steven Hatfield's Hatfield's goalmouth pass for the only goal of the game. Robert Roth gained the shutout. In their second game, Friday Friday night, the Optimist Hawks took on Fraser Stars (Michigan) (Michigan) and lost 8-3. The Hawks spun their wheels early and never recovered. Garrett McKnight, Matt Gross and Mark Lemieux scored for the Hawks, with Robbie Campbell adding two assists.
