? 10 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, Wednesday, April 8,1992 Save Your Lawn from the Return of the Grubs by Joanne Koskie Have you noticed unsightly brown patches appearing on your lawn? Is your yard over-run with scrounging skunks and raccoons? If you answered yes to either of these questions, it could mean the grubs arc back. In Ontario, the predominant variety of grubs are the larvae of the curopcan chaffer beetle. Their white curled bodies bodies arc an inch or more in length, with four legs near the head. These pests ptr assasasMiiBiraœsira can devastate a lawn by feeding on ; grass roots and, in extreme eases, the j turf can be rolled back like a rug as a result. If you suspect grubs, here's a simple simple test you can do as soon as the ground thaws in late April or early May. Remove both ends of an empty tin can and dig it about half way into a brown patch on your lawn. Fill the remaining remaining space in the can with water and wait until the next morning. At tracted to the moisture, the grubs will float to the surface. "Get on your lawns before they get active," says Douglas Archer, Nursery Products Buyer for Aikenhead's Home Improvement Warehouse, which opens next month in Scarborough, Scarborough, a suburb of Toronto. He recommends recommends the following treatment to eliminate grubs. Before seeding, use a non- leaching, slow release granulated ferti lizer with insecticide like nutrite's Superturf Superturf Plus with Chlorpyrifos, or use a fertilizer (without insecticide) followed followed by an ant and grub killer like Wilson's No Grub. If you're not using a hose-end applicator, the insecticide will be more effective if the area is well watered-in. Keep children and pets off the lawn for 48 hours following this stage, as a precaution. It's also a good idea to wait a few days before seeding be cause the organic nitrogen in the fertilizer fertilizer may inhibit seed germination. After treating your grub problem, begin the seeding process by raking the affected arca(s) of your lawn with a strong, hard garden rake to loosen the dead thatch. Level the area and cover with lawn top dress - a light mixture of peat moss, soil and loom. "Lawn top dress is a very conducive conducive medium for seed growth. In my experience, you'll get at least a 90 per cent survival rate using top dress, compared to only 50 per cent without it," Archer says. When choosing seed for you lawn, it's important to consider the following following questions: What condition is the soil in? Is it hard, clay soil? How much sunlight docs it get and from ■ what exposure? Is it a high-traffic area? Is it on a downhill slope? Do-it-yourselfers beware of stores Continued on Page 11 ÈIÜJÊ.
