The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, May 20,1992 7 by Ross Stevenson, M.P., Canada's 1991 Census is confirming confirming what many of us in Durham already already suspected - we live in one of our county's fastest growing areas. First results of the census, showing population changes, were released recently recently by Statistics Canada. Figures thus far available give some significant significant details of local development over the past five years. Oshawa's 18 per cent growth rate ranked highest for all metropolitan areas. areas. When the census was taken on June 4, 1991, Oshawa area population was 240,104, an increase of 36,561 from the previous census in 1986. By comparison the growth rate for Metropolitan Metropolitan Toronto was 13.4 per cent, and 7 per cent for Montreal. Among the fastest growing municipalities municipalities with more than 25,000 resident, resident, the Town of Newcastle ranked fifth, with a growth rate of 45.2 per cent. That was ahead of Pickering (40.2 per cent) but behind Ajax (56.9 per cent). In this category, Canada's two most booming municipalities are both just north of Toronto - Richmond Hill (71.4 per cent) and Vaughan (71.2 per cent). The number of people residing in the Durham federal constituency that I represent - which includes only part of the entire Durham Region - went up by a hefty 27.3 per cent. Durham constituency's constituency's 1991 population was 119,575, compared to 93,897 at the time of the 1986 census, and the federal federal riding now contains 40,815 individual individual dwellings. Population figures for Canada and the provinces offer fascinating insights insights into how our country is chang ing. Total population stood at 27,296,859, a 7.9 per cent jump from five years earlier. Forty years previously previously when the 1951 census was taken, taken, Canada had just over 14 million people. When you think about that, it means that during many of our own lifetimes this nation's population has more than doubled. The 1991 Census showed Ontario's Ontario's population increased 10.8 per cent to just over 10 million. British Columbia, which has grown ahead of the national average ever since it joined Confederation, was the fastest growing province with 13.8 per cent. However the Yukon Territory, with the smallest population, also grew faster at 18.3 per cent. Saskatchewan was the only province province to show negative growth. Its population population decreased 2 j)cr cent. But Newfoundland gained just 125 more residents. While Quebec's population grew to 6.5 million, as a proportion of the national total it declined over the last five years from 28.9 to 25.3 per cent. Back in 1951 Ontario and Quebec each were home to approximately 30 per cent of Canada's total population. As Quebec decreased comparatively, Ontario grew so that last year 37 per cent of all Canadians lived in this province. This first installment of the 1991 Census data as limited to population counts. More detailed statistics showing showing Canada's makeup and how we live will be released over the next 12 months. As sales increase, it becomes more difficult to keep track of what is on the shelves. Any suggestions? Good inventory management means having enough of the right merchandise on hand at the right time and at the right price. There is more to this than simply ensuring that you order order early. You must exercise strict control over inventory to avoid ordering ordering too much or too little. There arc four approaches to physical physical inventory control: - perpetual unit control - basics book - physical count - visual control Perpetual unit control consists of maintaining a continuing record of each item of merchandise, a record which includes daily sales, stock on hand, re-order time, cost and retail price and other pertinent information. The retailer should be able to look at the record and know what is in stock, how much money is invested in that stock, how quickly it is moving, and how much and how often it should be re-ordered. There are many forms of perpetual unit control systems. Small retailers should adopt the one that suits their needs. Basic book is a spin-off from perpetual perpetual unit control systems. It is a segregated segregated record of fast-moving items, maintained in a way which is easily monitored so that the retailer will never never be in short supply. A basic book will also help the retailer track changes changes in the buying habits of customers. Items which arc basic now, may not be basic a month from now. Physical count and visual control of inventory are just that. A physical count of the items in stock at year-end is necessary for tax purposes and for ensuring accuracy in record-keeping. Some retailers make a physical count more frequently as a way of crosschecking crosschecking other inventory records, as a safeguard against theft and damage and as a way of identifying slow- moving or old merchandise. Visual control is seeing what stock is on hand and recording as required. It is used mostly by the small retailer whose stock is visible on the shelves and can be re-supplied in a matter of hours. To be effective, visual control demands continuous scrutiny. Even then, the risk of error and loss of control control may dictate the need to switch to a more sophisticated system such as perpetual unit control. Regardless of what control system is in place, the retailer must ensure that each incoming shipment is checked for damage and for accuracy in the count. Incoming goods should go to the back of the shelves and the goods already on the shelves should be put in front. In essence, physical control, of inventory inventory is a system which gives the retailer a continuing record of each unit of merchandise both in and out, as well as units in stock.
