8 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, Wednesday, June 10,1992 r~ 1 Thoughts c? By Brad Kelly 3 on 3 Tournament Is Put to Bed The largest and longest babysitting job of my career ended in the late afternoon on Saturday. As the Crunch 'N' Munch team sank the final basket of the day in the 'A' final of the boys' 16-18 division, it brought the curtain down on a weekend that I will not soon forget. » This past Friday and Saturday marked the first-ever 3 on 3 basketball tournament for kids between the ages of 10-18 that The Canadian Statesman has sponsored. We'll remember the tournament for many reasons. All of them good. That might surprise some people, considering the bad exposure exposure kids in this particular age group get. I'm happy to report that this weekend went off without any incidents. These kids, all 140 of them, were a pleasure to work with. They deserve a lot of credit, and should be commended for the way they conducted conducted themselves. A lot of people were responsible for contributing to the success success of the tournament. Many of them are mentioned in an ad that appears elsewhere on these pages. As in most cases with an event of this size, it is impossible to thank everyone who had a hand in making the tournament the success that it was. To those who volunteered their time during the course of the weekend and aren't mentioned in the ad, thanks. As for the tournament itsélf, the kids never stopped amazing amazing me. Parents, how do you afford to pay thè bills to quench the thirst of these kids? As part of the registration fee, an Orange Bowl from McDonalds McDonalds was provided for both days. Friday night, the Bowl was filled with six gallons 'of orange juice. In slightly under two hours, it was empty. On Saturday, seven gallons were poured into the Bowl. It didn't last until noon. The skill level of the kids, especially in the 10-12 age division, division, was far higher than I had expected. It provided for some excellent battles among the various age divisions. Just how good was the competition? Well, one parent inquired inquired at the registration desk on Friday night how much we were charging for a weekend pass for spectators. Admission was free. But, had we known how much juice these kids could put away, we might have considered the extra income. What made me feel good about the weekend were the compliments compliments that parents passed along to me and the missus, who inherited the roll of assistant co-ordinator, and did an admirable admirable job. Aside from the thank-yous, the comments of one particular parent remained with me. She thought the tournament was an excellent way of keeping kids off the streets. I agreed, noting that with the weather being as crummy as it was on the weekend, weekend, it gave them something to do for a couple of days. But it went far beyond that, she said. Ever since the application application form appeared in the paper, her son and his teammates had been practising on evenings after school and on weekends. The tournament, she said, gave the kids something to focus on for the past month. And it was for that, that she thanked me. Comments like that made the weekend seem worthwhile. I couldn't help but laugh at an incident which occurred when I returned home on Saturday afternoon, following the tournament. Inside the door to greet the missus and me was Hoya, our 11-month-old golden retriever, who had a racquet- ball in her month. When we entered, she bounced the ball onto the floor, emulating a sound that neither the missus nor I care to hear for quite some time. These pages put the 3 on 3 tournament to bed for this year. Give us a wake-up call for next year if you're interested.
