Richards Newtonville and Newcastle Village Village residents are organizing to fight a designated potential landfill site at Morgan's Road near Lakcshore Road. The location, called VV2, is one of four potential sites within the Town of Newcastle released by the Interim Waste Authority (IWA) on June 4. About 55 residents from the affected affected area between Morgan's Road and Jayne Road and local concerned citizens attended an organizational meeting held by the Lakcshore Community Environmental Committee Committee on Saturday, June 20 in Newcastle Newcastle Village. Tom Holmes, who lives south of the potential site, thinks that "Metro and the government have gone too far now." As one of the key speakers at the afternoon meeting at St. George's Anglican Church Hall, Mr. Holmes told the audience the most southerly tip of the potential site VV2 is "one- half mile from the lakcshore." This particular location is "the smallest site the IWA has chosen at 87 hectares and is too narrow for an efficient landfill," said Mr.. Holmes. Residents living close to the potential potential landfill site could expect up to 300 trucks per day carrying waste, some of which would be considered considered to be toxic. The engineers at IWA say "there are high tech methods to protect leaching from happening.," Mr. Holmes said. However, sooner or later, the sites will leak, Mr. Holmes noted. When the potential site leaks it will go into the watershed, a creek which is in close proximity to the site and into Lake Ontario, said Mr. Holmes. Most people do not know what it is like to live near a landfill site, he pointed out. Mr.' Holmes talked about the amount of birds that flock and feast at landfills. "The birds spend time at the gar bage dump and at the end of the day leave. At Laidlaw there are literally thousands of birds." To make sure the members understand understand the impact on the land and the properties and environment around the potential site, the group is striving to set up committees and selecting a spokesperson. As one person said during the meeting, "If we wait and don't voice our thoughts now, it might be too late when the short list comes out."
