How many docs this make? Like vultures circulating a dying dying creature, "their" numbers are in creasing ensuring a slow, painful death for our community. We not only have the distinction of hosting Canada's only low-level radioactive radioactive dump site (at Port Granby), a nuclear power station with its high- level wastes and the country's only tritium removal facility with associai- Unfriendly Trip for Travellers Dear Mr. James: Bowmanville suffered an international international black eye on July 18, 1992. We have guests from the Netherlands staying with us for-several weeks. As has become our custom, we were flying flying their national flag and our Maple Leaf and Ontario Ensign in front of our home during their stay with us. The flag of the Netherlands was a gift to my wife from our guests during a visit to their country in 1987. Our guests and I left our home at Not Enough Flags For All Taxpayers Dear Sir: I'd welcome your help in explaining explaining that I do nol have an unlimited supply of Canadian flags for free distribution distribution to residents of Durham constituency. constituency. In the past couple of weeks, my Constituency Office has been deluged with flag requests. Apparently, some news media spread the message that anyone wanting a Canadian flag could simply phone their MP arid ask for one. While that might be a nice idea, it just isn't so. Each year the government provides every MP with 75 flags - 3 feel by 6 feet and suitable for use on an outdoor flagpole. In my case, about half of these are committed annually to local groups and organizations. For example, example, one Canadian Legion branch flies a flag at each of the several community community war memorials in its area. Of necessity, necessity, we try to allot the others to groups with special needs for a flag, such as Boy Scout and Girl Guide units. That means only a very few, if any, are left to be given to the general public on a first-come basis. I should add that there have been so many requests due to Canada's 125th anniversary that we've exhausted exhausted this year's supply, and won't receive receive more until next spring. I'm sorry so many had to be disappointed disappointed when we couldn't give them flags. Apparently, one newspaper told its readers that every Canadian is "entitled" "entitled" to a flag from their MP. But, j when you consider that there are-y 120,000 people in Durham riding, arid these flags retail for about $30 each, obviously that would be impossible. With my very best regards. Yours very truly, Ross Stevenson, M.P., Durham about 7:10 on Saturday and returned at about 14.30. On our return my wife, who had stayed home with children, asked why we had removed the flags from our verandah. We hadn't. Someone Someone had stolen the flags from the front of our home. Our guests were most surprised and saddened by what on closer inspection was obviously an effort effort to destroy someone else's property. property. The flags had been forcibly removed removed from the mountings. Enough force was applied to pull one hook out of the wood and straighten two others. Large headed nails used to hold the ends up had also been pulled out of the wood. Examination of the area showed that a bicycle had been ridden over the front, yard to a point adjacent to the front flower gardens and then the thief walked into the gardens and climbed onto the outside of the verandah. He then reached up and tore down the flags. A search of our neighbourhood failed to find any trace of the missing flags. Our visitors are on their third trip to our town and will probably be back. Last time, our town was very favourably favourably mentioned in a book written about their Canadian holiday. I am afraid that this sneak thief has assured that our town will be mentioned in this year's book, too! Unfortunately, it is unlikely that this reference will be quite so favourable. Should anyone reading this know who is responsible or the whereabouts of our flags a reward of $100.00 is offered offered for information leading to the arrest arrest and conviction of the party responsible. responsible. It is indeed sad to see the wonderful wonderful innocence that our town once exhibited exhibited being eroded by sheer unmiti- i. gated hooliganism. First Birthday ed wastes, and the BFI, Laidlaw, Metro Metro and IWA wolves howling at our doorstep, but DETOX Environmental Ltd. has airived, seemingly, in the dark of night. A couple of years ago, David Crombic came to Newcastle, one of the last relatively undeveloped and relatively unpolluted Lake Ontario waterfront communities. What he saw was good, and he believed this community community had great potential - only if preserved, conserved and protected. But, under the guise of a name which includes the word "environmental," "environmental," DETOX has made application application to operate a hazardous waste treatment facility at Bennett Road. Although Although their proposal does not include nuclear wastes (others, as mentioned above, beat them to it), nor PCB's, nor Pathological wastes (BFI has beaten beaten them to this one), nor explosives (St. Marys is the resident expert in this department), DETOX will "treat" any and all other hazardous wastes from anywhere in the Greater Toronto Area, and Peterborough. Great, eh? Along with all the other lovely waste industry situated in the Town of Newcastle, Newcastle, we've got it all covered! A couple of weeks ago, Laura Richards (in Outlook) speculated on a number of possible suggestions in the renaming of the Town of Newcastle. Although it seemed her suggestion of "Dumptown" was to add humour to. our plight - perhaps she was right. We attract these kinds of business interests interests anyways, why not tell the whole world this is the place to do "dirty business"?
