"Orchard Mills" encompasses a greater variety of farming besides apples. "Clarington" combines the former former township names Clarke and Darlington. "Pineridge" is a name that has been associated with the area for some time and is known outside the region. Mr. Wing was unable to specify how many suggestion forms were relumed with "Town of Bowmanville" Bowmanville" or "Town of Newcastle" written written on them except to say "there were some, of course." But since such suggestions duplicated existing community names they were ineligible ineligible and not considered. Newcastle Mayor Diane Hamre who attended the Monday night announcement, announcement, reminded reporters that the biggest reason people voted for a name change in the referendum referendum was to end the dual use of the name Newcastle and the confusion that this caused. You don't recreate that confusion with another name, the Mayor said. The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, August 19,1992 3 Carson Elliott Finally Makes It In the Pages of Time Magazine OSHAWA -- A three-year-old south Oshawa girl needs to find a new home and fast. Tara Junkin, a victim of a rare form of leukemia, will undergo a bone marrow transplant in the future. However, before that can happen she needs to be in a well-kept home with a fenced yard, her mother Linda said. The cleaner environment is a must because the one in which she, her mother and two siblings share isn't conducive to safe healing. "Water leaks through the ceiling, there are no screens on the windows and cats can get in," said Ms LeBlanc. Once the transplant takes place, Tara will have to be kept away from other children for some time, Ms LeBlanc said. But, for the single mother, money is tight. Currently, Tara is using an experimental drug which is due to be approved for general use in a few weeks. That treatment will go from being free to costing about $150 per day. Presently, Ms LeBlanc's monthly income rests at $ 1,200. PORT PERRY -- The Township of Scugog council has declared the area to be "The purple martin capital of Ontario." The resolution, which was passed unanimously by council, recognizes the purple martin as a good example of "the balance of nature in that its diet includes mosquitoes and other flying insects." The resolution refers to the birds as being "an attractive asset to a community because of the birds' appearance, song, cleanliness and diet." The idea for the designation was taken to the Scugog Council several months ago by Bill Barr, who told council the designation would add something unique to . the community. "Oh, Perot! How Like Godot." Those five words have placed the name of a Bowmanville man at the head of the Letters to the Editor page in Time Magazine. Carson Elliott, a faithful Time reader, says he usually writes the magazine a letter to the editor a couple of times each year. But, until the August 17 edition rolled off the press, none of his letters had been published. Seeing his name in Time has been a "lifelong ambition" for Mr; Elliott. Elliott. The couplet Carson Elliott used in describing the candidacy of Ross Perot refers to the person in the Samuel Beckett play entitled "Waiting for Godot." It so happened that Godot never arrived. And, it seems, neither did Perot. In a comment that was not published by Time, Mr. Ellioott also pointed noted that Perot, in his short term as a potential presidential candidate, had appeared on the front cover of Time magazine five or six times. In fact, he appeared more frequently frequently on the cover than did historic figures such as Churchill or Ghandi. This inspired Mr. Elliott to write: "Oh, Perot. Don't go in stiph haste. What will Time do without your face?" HEY!
