Higher starts in both single- detached and multiple housing units were reported in urban areas. Single- detached units rose four per cent to 74,000 units SAAR, while multiple starts reached 79,000, an increase ot fiyc per cent. "The increase in July mainly reflected reflected greater construction of social housing in Ontario. However, starts of single detached houses in a number of provinces continue to improve slowly," said Rita Daniel, Director of CMHC's Market Analysis Centre. Starts in Ontario jumped 35 per cent to 58,000 units from 43,000 units SAAR in June. Private sector starts re mained stable, while social housing expanded expanded dramatically. Quebec starts declined by 24 per cent to 29,000 units from 38,000 units SAAR last month.
