Just the way it should be. And further to that scenario, the team who entered the tournament as the number one seed, emerged as league champions. Again, just the way it should be. If there's any doubt, just ask any one of the members of the entry from Courtice. Backed by solid defence and stellar stellar godtending, Courtice captured their first league title in quite some time, blanking the Flying Dutchmen (Bowmanville) 2-0 in the championship championship final on Saturday evening at the soccer fields in Orono. Courtice managed to play shutout soccer for the one-day tournament, advancing to the championship game by virtue of a 2-0 win over Tyrone in the semi-finals. "It's been a long time coming," said goaltender John Chiodi, who recorded both shutouts for his team. "When we came here, we said we would play one game at a time, and play every game as though we were losing. "Luckily, everything worked out for us." The final game did have its anxious anxious moments for Courtice, who took a 1-0 lead into the second half after a goal by Craig Stacey. But, with the Dutchmen applying pressure in hopes of gaining the equalizer, Mark Long headed a beautiful goal into the far side to give Courtice a two-goal cushion. The Dutchmen continued to swarm Chiodi with an offensive surge in the final stages of the game, but a couple of key saves and tight defensive coverage enabled Courtice Courtice to gain the title. It was a nice way to conclude the day for Courtice, who finished on top of the league standings after compiling an 11-24 mark during the regular season. Making the victory even sweeter was the fact that, for the entire final game, they were forced to play one man short. A disqualification for verbal abuse of an official in the semi-finals left them one under the maximum for the finals. The one-day tournament format was a first for the league. It was a change from past years, when a full playoff format was used to eliminate teams from post-season play and determine determine a winner. But, because of university and college commitments facing many of the players, the one-day tournament tournament was devised to enable all of the teams to have a full squad for a run at the league title. From the beginning of the year, it was Courtice's aim to take first place overall, and receive a bye into the semi-finals. They wanted no part of finishing lower in the standings, and having to play three games to reach the finals. "Our intention at the beginning of the the year was to grab first place. We didn't want to have to play three games in the tournament," tournament," said Chiodi. "I think that's what beat the Dutchmen today. Playing three games in one day hurts." Indeed, the Dutchmen may have been a little fatigued heading into the final. They began the day with a quarter-final tilt against Salem, and advanced after a penalty shootout determined the winner. In the semi finals, they outlasted a stubborn team from Hampton 2-1 to advance to the finals against Courtice. The day did hold some surprises in early round play. Orono, the two-time defending league champions, were eliminated in their opening game by Hampton, 4-2. In the other quarter-final, Tyrone got by Solina after winning on a penalty shootout. They were then stopped by Courtice in the semis. Hooper's Trophy 4 7 0 Heslin's Légal Beagles 2 7 1 Oshawa 2 8 1 J.
