The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, September 23,1992 on Saturday Morning by Brad Kelly Do You Know Who is in the CSL Finals? Routinely every Monday morning, the CTV morning sports anchor greets me with all the scores and highlights of the weekends sports, while I sit comfortably on the couch devouring a bowl of cereal. cereal. ■■ ' He ended his broadcast this past Monday with the scores of the Canadian Soccer League semi-finals. Not a big fan of soccer, I didn't realize that the CSL was still in operation. That in itself seemed odd. As I sit here in front of my computer on Tuesday afternoon, the names of the two teams who qualified for the finals escapes me. I .have no idea who they arc. ' Is it because of my lack of interest in the sport, or has senility begun to set in? What I do remember, is that TSN will be showing the finals. But when that will be, I don't remember. I guess that answers my previous question. NICE DUDS -- Has anyone else attending the Eagles games lately noticed how fashion-conscious the league has become. Not in regards to the uniforms of the players, but rather the apparel worn by the coaches and assistants of opposing teams. I would have never guessed that one of last year's coaches of the Eagles, Paul Reed, could have been outdone. But it has happened. Manager Mike Laing was decked out from head- to-toe for his exhibition season debut at home on Sunday night. Coaches Wayne Marchment and Jeff Fox watched from the stands, so Laing took over the helm behind the bench. But it wasn't Laing who won the best dressed award. Those honours go to Bowmanville resident Mike Colwell, who was behind the bench as an assistant coach with the visiting Uxbridge Bruins. How long before we see these guys in the Sears catalogue, striking a pose for the men's fashion section? section? I CAN SEE - It was a secret last year, but my eyesight had begun to deteriorate to the point that the' prescription glasses in my possession were no longer strong enough. It got to the point where I could wear them at night, and still not make out the numbers and letters on the license plate ahead of me when I was driving. Needless to say, I didn't dare wear them while refereeing refereeing hockey for fear of giving fans more ammunition ammunition than they already needed. There were times last year when I could stand at the blueline closest to the score clock, and not have a clue how many minutes the clock showed remaining in the game. Well, after being fitted for contacts over the summer, summer, my eyesight has been restored. Now I'm resigned to the fact that yes, indeed, I am a poor referee. Last year, when fans yelled inquiries wondering if I was blind, the answer, quite frankly, was yes. But, now that I can see again, the same question still cascades down from the stands. Have you seen news in the making? If so, we'd like to hear from you. If you have information that might inform or entertain our readers, let us know. Or, if you witness some newsworthy event, call The Statesman at 623-3303. (You can leave a message on our answering machine if you call after 5 p.m.) At the end of 1992, we'll award $250 in "Statesman Bucks" to the person who calls in the best tip of the year. And, every month, we'll give away $20 in "Statesman Bucks" for the best news tip of the month. "Statesman Bucks" can be spent like cash in any participating local store. ■ The winners will be decided by The Statesman's editorial staff. While we will accept anonymous tips, you must allow your name to be published if you want to claim a prize. We are looking for two kinds of news tips: Tips for "spot news" would include events such as fires and accidents. Tips for features would give us leads on interesting people doing interesting things and might, for example, include a ' person with a noteworthy occupation, hobby or collection. Information about regularly-scheduled events such as club meetings, cheque presentations, and ribbon-cuttings is always welcome. However, such information would not normally qualify for a "News Tip of the Month" award. Thank you, in advance, for your participation in this project. We are confident , that your input will help make The Statesman a "newsier" newspaper.
