Newcastle had three full lines, while Dave Skan looked after the goaltending for absent Leo Kelly. The first period was all Newcastle as they racked up three goals without a reply from Rosedale. Greg Sloan cut in from the left side and scored with a shot along the ice that beat R. Talbert cleanly at 2:01 for a .1-0 lead. Bill Perry scored the next two, with the first at 9:36 assisted by Dave Roote and Grant Flintoff. Perry scored his second at 10:48, assisted by Brad Fin- ucan for a 3-0 lead. The second period saw Jerry Dost sent off for hooking and Rosedale went on the power play. Paul Vibert scored at 6:42 assisted by Chris Hurst to cut the Newcastle lead to 3-1. Dave Roote put Newcastle ahead 4-1 at 11:51 assisted by Bill Perry to end the period. Sandy McDonald started the third period on the right note when he scored at the 35 second mark along the ice after taking a pass from George Sainsbury.
