/ 2 The Canadian Statesman K/ceA&uU*, Bowmanville, Saturday, November 28,1992 Committee Attends Deep River Workshop CLG Update Lieutenant Governor Welcomed to Bowmanville Recently, the Newcastle Community Community Liaison Group travelled to Deep River for another weekend workshop. The first workshop of this type was held in Bowmanville so this was a "returning "returning the welcome" visit. Deep River is one of the potential host communities along with Gerald- ton and Port Hope. The workshop included sessions on building and maintaining trust, a session on active listening, community community involvement, communication aids, community action plans and a tour of the AECL Chalk River Laboratories. This 10,000 acre site is one of the potential host sites if it passes the Environmental Environmental Assessment. All potential volunteer host communities communities have to go through a similar Environmental Assessment as we are presently involved in here in Newcastle. Newcastle. People's concerns are recorded just as they have been in the various community community meetings and technical questions questions are addressed again just as we are presently doing in the Newcastle meetings. The Newcastle Community Liai- son Group has taken the tasks involved involved in the technical phase and assigned assigned . the co-ordinating responsibilities to various members of the group. These members are now engaged in writing the criteria and objectives for each task and locating the studies and experts available to us for input and consultation. Following this important part the information we still need will be commissioned commissioned and a report prepared for your consideration. The first of the experts to talk to us was Ms. Sandra Weston who gave us an overview of the requirement of Environment Environment Canada. Native Advisory Committee: At their regular Board meeting, trustees last night voted to consult further further with the Alderville First Nation on a Native Advisory Committee. The committee would serve as "an advisory advisory body to the Board on...matters affecting affecting native education." The Board will indicate its "desire to proceed" with the committee "preferably, "preferably, with the support and involvement involvement of the Band." Ontario Hydro Cheque: Ontario Hydro representative Derek Derek Reynolds presented a cheque for $63,000 to the Board on Thursday night, Nov. 26. The cheque is part of an Ontario Hydro incentive for energy efficient upgrades the Board made at Baltimore Public School. Bus Operators' Contract: / Trustees approved a three year contract with their bus operators which will see no increase in 1992-93, no increase and possibly a reduction in the 1993-94 and an increase equal to one-half of the Consumer Price Index Index in 1994-95 provided that this increase increase does not conflict with the goal of more closely matching rates paid in this Board with those in the coterminous coterminous Board. The Newcastle Community Liaison Liaison Group has also received permission permission to contract a study of the wells and homes of the people living near the Port Granby Wastes Management Site. This study will be aimed at providing providing a base level so that any changes changes in the area can be noted and corrected corrected immediately when the site is excavated. This proposed study came in existence existence as a result of requests made by the residents of Port Granby and concerns concerns expressed at the scoping or information information gathering meetings. Henry Jackman, was the special guest of the Bowmanville Santa Santa Claus Parade Committee on Saturday. He served as Parade Marshal for the 31st annual parade. On Saturday morning, Mr. Jackman was welcomed to the Bowmanville Town Hall for a brief reception and meeting with members of Town Council. As the Cobourg Concert Band plays the Vice-Regal Salute, Mr. Jackman paused on the steps of the Town Hall.
