She began by saying she had lost her voice earlier in the week but felt it was very important not to miss the opportunity to relate her shocking, but true story. She stated that it is the reality of what goes on in many women's women's lives, but too many women don't survive to talk about it. Francine is a survivor of 11 years of abuse. She is not alone since statistics statistics show 1 in 7 women have been her horrific experience that all came to an end one evening in May of 1991 when her husband shot her five times. Three of the bullets still remain in her body due to possible complications if they were to be removed. Francine' s husband was sentenced December 19,1991 to 12 years. At the trial his lawyer asked her "Does she not feel some guilt for being shot?" She feels it is wrong for the victim to be questioned in this manner. Francine would like to see changes in our judicial system. She feels there is a lot of time spent doing research while women are still being killed. As well, there is funding being used for abused, but these are only reported cases. His speech, entitled, "There but for the Grace of God go I," paid tribute tribute to the oft-overlooked casualties of war - the hundreds of students and instructors killed in combat-training accidents. Mr. Banting has held a diverse variety of positions in his life including RCAF flying officer during World War II. She pointed out to the members and guests that for a woman living in an abusive situation who has no money, money, no job and no self-esteem it seems impossible to get out. Right now, Francine is working hard to help establish a shelter in Bowmanville. Alliance House is in the beginning stages and we will hear a lot more about it as the plans progress. Francine feels there is a real need for a shelter but it's going to require require everybody working together. That is why it is being called Alliance House. Francine's courage and dedication to her cause of helping other victims of abuse was obvious throughout the evening. She is currently a local business business woman working to support herself herself and her six children. . On Sunday, December 6th there will be a vigil at the town hall at 2 p.m. to commemorate survivors of abuse and those that were not so fortunate. fortunate. Afterwards, there will be a group discussion at a local church hall. During the business section of the meeting, Joanne Soper was the recipient recipient of the annual bursary given to the Centre for Individual Studies. The ; bursary is to help a student with her career goals through higher education. The next meeting of the club will be held on Thursday, December 10th. A special Christmas Reading will be presented by club member Janice Slo- combe. Carol Alder Local Band to Play Concert At High School The Eddy Moon band will perform perform Thursday evening, December 10th at Bowmanville High School auditorium. The concert will help raise money money for the BHS Music Department. Tickets are $10 in advance, available available at The King Street Bar and Grill, or $15 at the door. The Eddy Moon band is also hoping to .capture some live action footage of. themselves and the atidi- ( ence during the Thursday night show. x / "If we get a lot of good stuff on tape it might go on to Much Music," explains guitarist and singer Ed Bohlken, who graduated from BHS himself in '84. "And, if we get a lot of really great stuff, we might use it in a compilation (of the band's con- certtours)." Concert footage gathered on Thursday will be edited together with staged scenes to be filmed the night before the concert. The resulting video will likely be used for promotional purposes when the band takes its show to the Maritimes Maritimes in January. The members of the Eddy Moon band are: Ed Bohlken, lead vocals and guitar; Nancy Geradi, vocals and percussion; (both graduates of BHS); Phil Smy, bass; Mike Ar- scott, drums; and Pete Smith, keyboards keyboards and saxophone. The Rebekah Lodge #125 of Bowmanville celebrated its 80th birthday on Saturday, November 21, in the Nightingale Centennial Temple. On Saturday, November 21st, Beehive Beehive Rebekah Lodge #125 of Bowmanville Bowmanville celebrated their 80th birthday birthday at the Nightingale Centennial Temple by enjoying a roast beef dinner dinner followed by entertainment. A number of special guests were present including Viola Higgs, President President of the Rebekah Assembly of Ontario, Ontario, Pat Frayne, Past President, Grace Love, Past President, District Deputy Presidents of Oshawa East - Nancy Norman, of Oshawa West - Jean Severs, of Toronto No. 10 Betty Jean Hall, Marg Barber, Right Herald of Assembly, Harris McKeen Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Ontario, I.O.O.F. and Harry Wade, Past Grand Master. Mrs. Arlene Ayrc, accompanied by Cory Kuipcrs sang Will You Remember, Remember, Alice Blue Gown and He Touched Me, all of which were enjoyed enjoyed by all present. Following this Doris Wollslcin gave two humorous readings plus Red, Skelton's "Tribute to Canada." The Sydenham Kiwanis choir of Oshawa (a group of retired . gentlemen who love to sing) delighted the audience with a half-hour of songs from yesteryear interspersed with humor humor by their leader Vcm Cooper. A decorated Birthday Cake was cut by Noble Grand, Carolyn Alexander, assisted by Grace Murdoch, and 58 year member of our Lodge and Florence Florence Moore a 55 year member. All present were served a piece of cake along with a cup of tea to conclude this memorable event.
