To serve the expanding population,, St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Bowmanville has established a small church in Tyrone. This new mission church, St. Marguerite Marguerite Bourgcoys, is in the village of Tyrone and uses the beautiful, century-old century-old United Church. Reverend J. Harold Leahy, Pastor of St. Joseph's Parish in Bowmanville has stated that "we are very pleased that the United Church of Tyrone has agreed to rent us their lovely little church so that we may celebrate Sunday Sunday Mass prior to their regular Sunday service. Many Catholics had difficulty difficulty travelling from the northern extremities extremities of Newcastle and communities as far away as Pontypool to attend Sunday Sunday Mass in Bowmanville." Bishop James Doyle has given his permission to establish this new mission church, starting with Mass on Sundays. All other services, such as weddings and funerals will continue to take place at St. Joseph's Parish. The church is located on the north side of Hwy. 14 right in the center of the hamlet of Tyrone. Sunday Mass is celebrated at 9:45 a.m. Father Leahy says, "we really hope that the many Catholics who found it difficult in the past to attend Mass will now want to come out and join us in the warm, friendly, country church environment. When the Parish Associate, Reverend Vic Valles, officiates, he brings his guitar and the church is filled with joyful singing." On Christmas day and New Year's day there will be mass at the regular time, 9:45 a.m. Fathers Leahy and Valles extend a warm invitation to everyone who would like to attend Mass every Sunday Sunday or during the upcoming holidays. Father Leahy further stated that he greatly appreciated the co-operation of the Tyrone United Church in sharing sharing their church with the Catholic community. *' / .. The Canadian Statesman.
