6 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, Wednesday, December 2,1992 Silver Medal for Clarke at OFSAA V Phone Brad Kelly at 623-3303 CONGRATULATIONS, COACH! -- It was brought to our attention on Monday afternoon that longtime volleyball coach at Clarke High School, Lyn Lowry, received some special recognition at the OFSAA awards banquet last Thursday night. Lyn was presented with a beautiful pen set for his outstanding leadership in school sport. He then coached his senior boys' team to the finals of the 'AAA' volleyball championships on Saturday. Quite an accomplishment for Lyn, who has been at Clarke for 31 years. DEBLOIS SHINES -- Senior winger Craig deBlois scored the go-ahead goal, breaking a 1-1 tie, en route to Colgate University's 7-3 win over York University during last weekend's Duracell Hockey Challenge in Toronto. deBlois' goal was the first of five straight by the Red Raiders. In their opening game of the four-team tournament, Colgate tied the University of Toronto 1-1. The other team in the two-day event was Lake Superior State, who were the eventual champions. deBlois now has two goals and three assists in eight games. PASSED ALONG A THANKS -- Organizers of the recently completed grade eight volleyball championships passed along a thank-you to the tournament sponsor, Hooper's Trophy Centre, and to Hugh and Michelle Walters and Lee' McArthur for their split-second decisions while officiating. Game time on December 19 is 2:00. p.m. at the Recreation Complex. by Brad Kelly Few can ever recall the team that was the runner-up in a game which decides an Ontario championship. That certainly won't be the case with the Clarke High School senior boys' volleyball team. They made an everlasting impression. impression. Facing schools three and four times the size of their own at the OFSAA 'AAA' volleyball championships championships at Humber College this past weekend, they reached the finals against Oakridge of London. Clarke had been seeded second in the tournament. tournament. Unfortunately, they ran into a buzz saw by the name of Paul Duerden who led his team to a three set victory to claim the title of Ontario's Ontario's best high school volleyball team. "We just could not stop Deurd- en," said coach Lyn Lowry after Saturday's gold medal game. "They went to him from everywhere. When you can't stop him, it's tough to win. "He's one of Ontario's finest' volleyball players and today he beat us." Clarke won the opening game 15-10, but dropped the next two to Oakridge, seeded third, by scores of 15-5 and 15-7. It was a disheartening loss for Clarke, who were looking to bring home their second consecutive Ontario Ontario championship. Last year, competing competing at the 'A' level, they won easily. This year, the players decided to test their skills against the best at the 'AAA' level. They proved they could play with the much larger schools, and were only a couple of breaks away from capping off a dream season. BHS Basketball Team Finishes They managed to win the first game of the finals in convincing fashion. Leading 8-7, Trevor Lomax reeled off five points in a row from the service line to increase the lead to 13-7. Dustin Reid, a member of the provincial volleyball team along with Deurden, served up the last two points. With the gold medal in sight, things began to fall apart. Deurden, who was silenced in the opening, began to take command of the match. He staked Oakridge to an early 7-1 lead with thunderous spikes. And, when Oakridge increased increased their margin to 11-4, a third and deciding game was imminent. Lowry discounted the thought that emerging as champions entered his team's minds after the opening game. "We were prepared for a three game match. That's what we expected expected it to be. "We knew after we won the first game fairly easily that it wasn't going going to be that easy, and that it was going to gel tougher." He was right, in fact, although Clarke seemed in command after building an early 6-2 lead in the third and deciding game. But again, as invisible as Deurd en was in the early stages of the ; game, he managed to take control of ; the match once again. He was flawless from all over the court as his team went to him time : and again. It proved to be the right ; adjustment, as Oakridge went on a 13-1 run to capture the gold medal. Though his team was visibly dis- ' appointed following the loss, Lowry i wasn't going to let the outcome of! the final game take away from their, season. "Any time an 'A' school can come in here and achieve a medal,; it's quite an accomplishment," he said. The captain of the Clarke High School senior boys' volleyball team, Dustin Reid, presents younger brother, Darryl, with a silver medal while receiving a friendly punch to the midsection at the OFSAA 'AAA' volleyball championship at Humber College on Saturday night. Clarke beat the odds by reaching the finals against the best high school teams in the province. . Tournament with Win by Brad Kelly Bowmanvillc High School coach Bill Todd would have liked a better end result from his junior boys' basketball basketball team this past weekend, but was encouraged by what he saw. Hosting their own eight-team tournament that served as a kick-off to the basketball season for the, boys, Bowmariville were eliminated in their second game by Port Perry. If it was any consolation to the players, Port Perry emerged as the tournament champions after posting a win over Cobourg West in the finals. finals. For Todd, the tournament gave him a good idea of what type of team he has to work with this year. "We have got a long way to go, but it's early," he said. "We've got a lot of midgets on this team who have moved up, and of my three returning returning players, two were injured." Bowmanvillc began the day with a solid 34-30 win over Crescent of York Region. The victory was due, in part, to the offensive play of Tom Cookson' who led the Bowmanvillc attack with 12 points, 10 of those in the second half. Many of the points Darrell Cowles of Bowmanvillc High School leaps over the back of a player from Crescent during first round action of a junior boys' basketball tournament on Saturday. Bowmanvillc won their first game, but were eliminated in their next game by Port Perry, came in the later stages, with the outcome of the game still in doubt. Both Darrell Cowles and Rueben Kortc had five points in the opening round win. BUt the second game was a much different story. A far superior defence defence by Port Perry.enabled them to taken convincing win. "Their defensive play was really very good. It showed against us,' ' said Todd. Port Perry had opened the tournament tournament with a win over Central Commerce Commerce of Toronto. In the consolation final, Anderson Anderson came up with a win over Central Commerce. Despite not making the finals, Todd felt that Saturday's tournament tournament gavé his players a good idea of the type of competition that will be facing them when LOSSA league play begins today with a game in Eastdale. "Our defence needs a lot of work," he said. "We had flashes of brilliance, and the players were trying trying to do what we've worked on in practice. It's just a matter of getting used to each other." Bowmanville will play a pair of road games, today in Eastdale and December 14 at Doncvan, before playing their first home match of the season on January 5. The senior girls' volleyball team at M.J. Hobbs Senior Public School emerged as the area champions last week after defeating The Pines in the finals, 8-15,15-13,15-10. Team members include, front row, (1-r), Natalie Brunton, Amanda Ball, Natalie Worden, Alana Jones. Back row, (1-r), Carissa Allin, Patricia Patricia Goff, Rochelle Oliver, Danielle Hanc, Jessica Powell, Doug Arscott (coach). Absent was Kim Watt. FREE TURKEYS!
