The Canadian Statesman K/ecAouU*., Bowmanville, Saturday, December 5,1992 Students Upgrade Skills and Schooling At Education Centre An estimated 400 students are updating their education at the new headquarters for adult education in Maple Grove. The Centre for Individual Studies, Studies, now located in the Maple Grove East Public School, held its official Opening on Wednesday evening, December 2. "I don't think that we ever expected expected it to get quite so large," said Dagmar Busshoff, the dean of the school. However, the Centre has reported steady growth since it opened its doors in the basement of Bowman- ville's Central Public School. The school re-located to Maple Grove in October after outgrowing the Bowmanville Bowmanville location. The Centre allows students to complete their high school diploma, providing credit courses in all subjects subjects from grade nine to 12. It also enables students to upgrade computer computer and keyboarding skills, utilizing software available in business and accounting operations. Ms Busshoff notes that computer and business courses are among the more popular subjects at the school. The school now has a total of 10 teachers. An adult basic literacy program is also operating at the Centre for Individual Individual Studies. And, in the past, it has operated an English as a Second Language class. Programs are available available for students on an individual basis, although some classes also involve involve workshops and seminars. The Centre is open weekdays and four nights per week, to suit the schedule of the adult learner. Eva Nichols, alternative education education officer for the Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education, estimates that there are about 1,500 students attending the five adult education education centres operating across the jurisdiction of the Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education. "It's very nice to be involved in such a special event, so close to home," said School Board Chairman Mike Slocombe at this week's official official opening of the school. He noted that, because of the popularity of the Centre for Individual Studies, it had outgrown its former home at Central Public School. Dave Broughton, speaking on behalf behalf of, the school's Student Council, said "Now we have a school that has a lot more to offer." He noted that the Maple Grove building has three times the capacity of the old site and also offers amenities such as a student student lounge area and ample parking. Brian Todd, Superintendent of Instruction for the Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education, paid tribute to the efforts of the Centre Centre for Individual Studies staff, noting noting that five years ago, the school board wondered if anyone would take advantage of the adult program. "The staff have brought all this together," together," he said. Regional Councillor Larry Hannah, Hannah, who represented the Town of Newcastle at the official opening, praised the school board for offering an adult education program. "With the re-structuring of the economy of Canada and the world, this type of facility is needed," he said. The Centre was formally opened with the cutting of a ribbon by Ward Three Trustee Bob Willsher and student student Grace Feddema.
