Never yet had she once refused to babysit, but today, Christmas Eve, was different., Mr. and Mrs. Vanders had been invited invited to a Christmas party and they had telephoned Leslie to babysit their children. children. Leslie didn't want to say yes, because, because, her big brother, Jason, was coming home from University, and Leslie hadn't seen him for seven months. But she couldn't say no, because because she really liked the twins and the four month old baby and she babysat babysat them every Friday night. By now, she was used to Jonathan's silly pranks. So, she had said yes. Leslie rang the doorbell to the HUGE Vanders' house. Mrs. Vanders opened the door, dressed in a red suit with a big, full skirt. "Oh. Leslie," Mrs. Vanders exclaimed," I was wondering wondering where your where!" Leslie smiled. She had always liked Mrs. Vanders. Just then, Mr. Vanders called from the living room. "Belinda!, "Belinda!, the baby wants you!" Mrs. Vanders Vanders sighed heavily. "Follow me," said Mrs. Vanders to Leslie, as she led her into the living room. Kayla, the seven year old, ran up and gave Leslie a big hug. Leslie smiled, and patted her on the head. Just as she caught sight of, Jonathan, playing lego on the carpet, her smile froze. Jason always played lego when she was babysitting at her own house. Leslie felt a little sad, not being able to see her brother until the next morning, but she brushed away her emotions when she heard Mrs. Vanders shout good-bye from the doorway. "What arc we going to do?", Samantha asked. Leslie sighed, "Do what ever you want," she said. Jonathan Jonathan laughed. "Sure," he said in a dumb way. "Let's go trash Dad's dumb Christmas lights, that he put up outside last night." Leslie shook her head, "Anything except ruining something something belonging to your family." Jonathan Jonathan made a face. "Shucks!", he said. Just then, Tyler, the baby, started to cry. His pitiful little cry, suddenly, like magic, brought Leslie back to life! She took him out of his crib, and threw him up in the air. "Come on, guys!," she cried, "Come help me make gingerbread houses in the kitchen." kitchen." All six children gasped, jumped up, and Scurried into the kitchen as fast as little mice. "No, Kait- lin," Leslie said patiently, a half hour later. "You only put icing where the graham crackers go." Leslie was probably probably enjoying herself more than the children. She remembered when she was little, her Mom would never allow allow her to goof off with sweet foods, stuffing them into her mouth anytime she pleased. "Done!," Kayla announced. announced. "Me too," said Samantha. "Me three!," Jonathan exclaimed, observing observing his masterpiece. Leslie plunked the last candy cane in place, on her own gingerbread house, She smiled at her house. Then, she let her eyes rest on the big bowl of candy in the middle of the table. Remembering seven years before, she was about to put it high in the cupboard, so the children children wouldn't get sick from candy, but that was what her Mother had done to her as a child. "Here", she thrust the bowl to Jonathan. Jonathan. "Share this out between you." "What do we do, now, Leslie?," Olivia Olivia asked. She was puzzled, about the cardboard, construction paper, three pairs of scissors, glue and markers and pencil crayons scattered all over the table. "We are going to make presents for your Mommy and Daddy, and decorations decorations for the Christmas tree and the front windows!," Leslie announced. "Cool!!," Jonathan shouted. Leslie demonstrated to the children how to make surprise baskets and home-made wrapping paper. While they were busy working, Leslie and the children munched on candy canes and gingerbread gingerbread men. The results of the wrapping wrapping paper and the decorations had been MARVELLOUS! Finally, Leslie helped Kayla, Samantha, Tyler and Olivia to write thank you letters to leave out for Santa Claus. At nine o'clock, Mr. and Mrs. Vanders came home. "Look, Belinda! The children arc all in the living room with Leslie watching Frosty the Snowman!" Mrs. Vanders nodded. "I sec them, Chris." Mr. and Mrs. Vanders snuck into the living room quietly. Mrs. Vanders woke Olivia, Samantha and Kayla. Leslie stood up to leave. "Don't forget to leave cookies and milk out for Santa!" Santa!" Leslie whispered to Jonathan. Leslie put on her jacket. She waved good-bye, and was about to leave, when Mrs. Vanders called her name. "You almost forgot you money," said Mrs. Vanders. She handed Leslie twenty dollars. "Oh, and here. This is our thanks to you." Mrs. Vanders handed Leslie a gift wrapped in red paper. Leslie said thank you. She continued continued to walk down the path. Leslie suddenly felt great. She turned around and smiled. "Merry Christmas!" The End! It's our sincere pleasure to serve you, dear friends. Thanks!
