8 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, December 30,1992 PRESIDENTS HONOURED -- Each year, the organizing committee of the Schickedanz Christmas Classic honours a group of individuals at the opening ceremonies of the hockey tournament. This year was no exception. All of the presidents of the Bowmanville Minor Hockey Association were included in opening' ceremonies, and a plaque bearing their name and tenure as president was unveiled. Those honoured included, Don Welsh (1973-75), Keith Schackelton (1975-77), Cal Potter (1977-79), the late Jim Hooper (1979-80), Joe Sweet (1980-81), Roy Jeffers (1981-83), Bruce Lush (1983-85), Joe Real (1985-87), A1 DeSmedt (1987), Greg Adams (1987-89), Paul Robinson (1989-91), Paul 1 Jackman (1991-93). SAFETY FIRST -- Every year at this time, hundreds of thousands of Ontarians take to the snowy trails to enjoy the ultimate in winter recreation and transportation: snowmobiling. Unfortunately, tragic injuries and fatalities occur because of disregard for snowmobile safety. The combination of alcohol and driving a snowmobile is particularly dangerous. The Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs is asking everyone to take extreme caution this year, and make the winter season one of happiness instead of sorrow. TOURNAMENTS ARE EVERYWHERE -- Seems you can't pick up a newspaper these days without seeing coverage of a local hockey tournament. Toronto has a couple of big ones in progress, which include teams from all over the world. Locally, there is the five-day Christmas Classic, and in Newcastle, three separate tournaments including events for tyke, novice and peewee aged players will conclude today. It adds up to lots of activities for children and parents this holiday season. Minor Toros Capture Three Titles Schickedanz Classic Concludes Today Bowmanville Toro teams had a successful start to the 4th Annual Schickedanz Christmas Classic, winning three championships in the minor division. The five-day tournament began on Saturday, with minor teams in the novice, atom, peewee and bantam bantam divisions beginning play. Finals for those teams were held Sunday night and throughout Monday. The second half of the tournament, tournament, involving major-aged teams in all divisions, began on Monday. Their finals are taking place to- final game with a 4-2 victory over the. Oshawa Flames to advance them to the 'C Championship. Everfresh Juice The first championship win for Bowmanville teams at the Schickedanz Schickedanz Christmas Classic was by the Everfresh Juice minor atoms. Facing Duffield in the 'C Championship Championship on Sunday night, Bowmanville Bowmanville emerged with a 4-1 win. Bowmanville had to settle for third place in their pool, after posting posting a 2-1 record in the round robin. They opened the tournament with a 2-0 loss to Whitby, but followed with identical 4-3 victories over Scarborough and Markham in their final two games. They finished behind Scarborough, Scarborough, who were tops with 8 1/2 points, followed by Markham with 8. Whitby settled for fourth with 6 points. Harrison Fuels, The Harrison Fuels minor pee- wees were unable to capture the"'D' Championship in their division on Monday night, but they didn't go down without a fight. Pickering won the marathon game in the second overtime period for a 54 victory. Bowmanville were unable to pick up a victory in the tournament, suffering suffering losses in all three of their round robin games. • The York Toros and Peterborough Peterborough beat Bowmanville in their opening two games on Saturday by scores of 6-1 and 4-2 respectively. In their final game on Sunday, they lost a close 2-1 game to the Oshawa Red Wings. York finished on top of the division division with 11 points, followed by Peterborough Peterborough (9), Oshawa (6) and Bowmanville (2 1/2). Bowmanville Kinsmen A unique situation unfolded in the minor bantam division, as the Bowmanville Kinsmen had the op portunity to be crowned as both the * 'B' and 'A' champions. > With only seven entries, instead • of the usual eight, the winning team 1 in the 'B' Championship game advanced advanced to the 'A' Championship to meet the top team in the division. • After an exciting 8-4 come-from-' behind victory in the 'B' final over ' Whitby, Bowmanville moved on to ' die 'A' Championship game against ' the Toronto East Endcrs. Toronto emerged as the champi- ! ons, with a convincing 8-3 victory. In round robin play, Bowman-. ville finished with an undefeated , record of 2-0-1. In their opening game, they defeated defeated Goulding Park 2-1, followed by a 3-3 tie against Aurora. In their final game on Sunday, they ■ trounced Humberview 7-1. They finished on lop of their pool with 11 1/2 points, but the Toronto East Enders finished with 12 1/2 points on their side of the draw, 1 gaining a bye into the 'A' final. 'C' Championship for Dennis Pizzeria Minor Novices PLAYING PENALTY FREE PAYS -- Once again, the sixth, annual Esso Penalty Free Sweepstakes will be in effect beginning January 1 and running through to February 7. The program was developed to encourage skills, safety and sportsmanship throughout amateur hockey. During the contest, any amateur hockey team in Ontario that plays a penalty free game can enter the sweepstakes. The entire team will be entered into the contest and each player will receive an Achievement Certificate recognizing their team's penalty free play. In addition, several teams will have the opportunity to win a number of fabulous prizes. Admission for this special event will be $1 or a non-perishable food item. All proceeds will be going to the local food banks. Dennis Pizzeria The Dennis Pizzeria minor novices novices held off a late charge by Newmarket Newmarket in the 'C' Championship on Monday morning, holding on for a 3- 2 victory. The Oshawa Flames finished last with one point. It wasn't the greatest of starts to the tournament, as Bowmanville dropped their first two games in pool play.
