This Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the Recreation Complex, the Eagles will face the best players from the other five teams in the league during the annual all-star game. A banquet will follow. •■••••••••■• ATHLETES OF THE YEAR -- The plaques have been engraved, the winners notified, and story prepared for The Canadian Statesman Male and Female Athlete of the Year Award for 1992. Due to a shortage of space this week, the announcement will be held over until next week's edition. Who will be selected this year? Past winners have included Rob Snoek, Jim Shaw, Nicole Devonish and Pam Locke. FREE SKATING -- Very little in life is free anymore, but the Optimist Club of Bowmanville is offering free public skating through the months of January and February at the Recreation Complex. Every Thursday from 4-4:50 p.m., anyone with a pair of skates is invited to strap on the blades -and take a few laps around the ice for no charge. They include Leonard Wells, Brian Elliott, Kalis Rasmussen and Adrian Deman. •Active Bodies were the *A' champions champions of the Newcastle Ladies' Slo Pitch League after a three games to two series win over Pontypool in the finals. •Lisa McLeod was selected as the MVP of the OCAA Women's Softball Championships at Durham College, leading her team to the gold medal. November •Stephanie Axford, of Durham College, was named to the tournament all-star team at the OCAA women's soccer championships. Durham won the silver medal. •The junior boys' seven-a-side rugby rugby team at Bowmanville High School captured the Ontario Rugby Union championship with an impressive 21- 0 romp over Banting High School of Alliston. •With a 2-0 win over Kirby in the finals, the Newcastle Public School co-ed soccer team captured the junior school championship. •The Clarke High School junior boys' volleyball team won their second second consecutive COSSA 'AA' title. •For the second consecutive year, Ontario Street Public School won the Bowmanville Junior Schools Co-ed Soccer Championship.
