Works of Famous Canadian Artist | New President for Chamber Now on Display at Oshawa Gallery by Lorraine Manfredo - An exhibit of paintings by an important important Canadian artist of the late 19th century is now on display at Oshawa's Robert McLaughlin gallery. Central to the exhibition is the large canvas entitled: "Bathers at Capri," Capri," by Hamilton-bom Impressionist William Blair Bruce (1859-1906). The salon painting, showing nudes at the beach, is on loan from the Art Gallery of Hamilton. Thirty smaller oil sketches and pencil drawings by Bruce make up the remainder of the show at McLaughlin. The collection was discovered in the archives of a Swedish museum by 'McLaughlin Gallery Director Joan Murray. Her bid to repatriate the overlooked overlooked works was successful in 1985. These numerous smaller studies, which explore details of the same nude subjects in the larger canvas, are extremely illuminating in documenting documenting the 10 years of preparatory work . which led to the final creation of the larger oil painting. "I think the general public will be very interested in seeing the long process process involved," says Director Joan Murray. "The exhibit shows a decade of hard work." The care taken to perfect the earlier earlier drafts will prove informative to many contemporary artists, Murray says, but she does not foresee a return to such a scholarly approach to painting. painting. "The artist of today works more with the camera. Few artists today would use the laborious, meticulous approach," says Murray. The "Bathers of Capri" won a gold medal award at the 1901 Pan- American Exhibition in Buffalo. The painting is done in the Impressionist Impressionist style, which the artist learned in France under direction from master Impressionist, Claude Monet. In 1887, after studying at an academy in Paris, Bruce settled with his wealthy Swedish Swedish wife in Givemy, where Monet also lived. The Impressionist treatment of color color was considered radical before the turn of the century. The, Canadian- bom artist learned to apply the technique technique in his own way. "It seems to me that Bmce, having understood the vitality of Impressionism, Impressionism, wished to combine it with painting painting the figure, the height of aspiration, some thought, for an artist of the day," Ms Murray states in a booklet about the artist's work. "By zeroing in on this one harmonious harmonious and ambitious work, the exhibition exhibition hopes to bring to life an important artist and hint at the ideals underlying the training of a serious salon contender contender of his day who had become an adherent of the style known as Impressionism." Impressionism." The William Blair Bruce exhibit opened January 7th and will be on view until March 14 th at the' McLaughlin Art Gallery in Oshawa.
