A clean-up criteria sub-committee, made up of members form Newcastle, Hope Township, Port Hope, Ottawa and experts from Canada and the U.S., has been formed. This committee meets weekly to discuss the questions raised by those citizens who have attended attended our meetings. One question which was raised is "how is clean is clean enough"? This follows the question, what is in the Port Granby dump site? Easy questions! questions! The answers are more difficult. We have examined the reports and realize realize that there is not much known about the contents' of the site. Tests will have to be completed to identify just how 'much of the following is in the various pits and where it is located. Do the pits contain: antimony, arsenic, barium, beryllium, cadmium, chromi um, cobalt, copper lead, mercury, molybdenum, molybdenum, nickel, selenium, silver, vanadium, vanadium, zinc, benzene, ' toluene, xylene, methylene, chloride, carbon tetrachloride, trichlorofluoromethane, ethylene, dichloride, trichloroethylene, benzoapyrene, benzanthracene, diben- za-authacene, benzo-perylen, fluoranthene, fluoranthene, naphthalene' phenanthrene, pyrene, pyrene, p-cresol, dichlorophenal, trichlo- rophenal, pentachlorophenol, styrene, duminum, boron, cyanide, chloride, fluoride, magnesium, nitrate, nitire, strontium, sulpur, titanium, uranium and many others too numerous to men tion here. Once we have established the presence presence of these contaminants the next job will be to establish clean up numbers. To what degree or level so we remove these contaminants. This is where you, the citizens, come in. Much will depend upon your input and desires. We have reached this far because concerned citizens raised the issues. The next step is also up to you. What will be the end use of the site once it has been cleaned up? The answer answer to that question will be the bench iaison Group mark for clean-up criteria. This process is different since you make the decisions decisions but you cannot make a decision in silence or without knowing the background information. This is not the only question which has been raised but space does not allow allow us to itemize all of thé activities and work that has been or is going on.
