6 The Canadian Statesman TVeitnuU*, Bowmanville, Saturday, January 23,1993 Police Learning Centre to be Created at Durham College Durham Regional Police and Durham Durham College are forming a partnership to create a Police Learning Centre on the College grounds at the Oshawa campus. The Police Learning Centre will be staffed by both police and civilian members who will co-ordinate a wide variety of learning opportunities for employees of the police service. These opportunities will involve: • 1. PERSONAL SKILLS TRAINING Members of the police service will receive enhanced skills training in use of force skills, officer and public safety skills and in particular conflict resolution. resolution. 2. EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES Members of the police service, will be afforded opportunities to continue their education through the College and its University affiliates. The Police. Service Board will continue its education education tuition subsidy program. 3. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES The Police Learning Centre will coordinate coordinate and facilitate exchanges of personnel and learning opportunities for members of the police service within within community groups, private industry and other police services. An implementation team involving College personnel and police personnel was formed several months ago and it is anticipated that their work will be Mixed Reaction to Pay Equity Issues By Women Teachers The Federation of Women Teachers' Teachers' Associations of Ontario applauds the Ontario government for its intention intention to add proportional and proxy comparisons to the Pay Equity Act, but raises serious concerns about the methods methods proposed to accomplish this. The organization voiced strong objection to several other provisions of the amending amending Bill 102. The amendments cover women who are among the lowest-paid workers in Ontario. The FWTAO, _a member of the Equal Pay Coalition, represents the 42,000 elementary women teachers employed by the public school boards of Ontario. Teachers are already covered covered by the Pay Equity Act. "We are dismayed," said Lorriane Stewart, of the Federation staff, in a presentation today to the Standing Committee on the Administration of Justice, "to see the proposed delay in implementation...snatching away money money from the hands of those people least able to afford it." The concept of "protecting the Crown" also came under attack as the group urged the government not to abuse its legislative power in shielding itself from the responsibility faced by other employers.
