8 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, Wednesday, February 3,1993 By Brad Kelly Nervous Time for Players As OHL Draft Lists Appear The Draft. Two words that carry an awful lot of significance among young hockey hockey players who were born in either 1976 or '77, and arc in what is referred referred to as their draft year. As the hockey season begins to wind down for many teams, the next couple of months are a crucial lime for those hoping to move up into a higher level of hockey, most notably the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). For four area players, the remainder of the hockey season could go a long way in determining whether or not they'll be pulling die sweater of an OHL team over their heads as their name is called over the public ad dress system on draft day this year. One area scout for an OHL team, who requested anonymity, confirmed confirmed that two area players from the Bowmanville Goodyear Eagles, and two more from the Central Ontario *AAA' Midget Wolves had their names appear on the first draft list of eligible players that was circulated by the Central Scouting Bureau in November. Gary Adams and Jeff Murphy of the Eagles, and Ryan Robinson and Ryan Cresanto of the Wolves caught the eye of scouts and were included on the November list. Another list is expected to be circulated to OHL teams in early February. A final list is prepared just prior to the day of the draft The final list also rates goallendcrs, and could contain the name of one other local player, Chris McCarthy, who suited up for the Wolves this season. Adams is in his second season with the Eagles, and after starting the year on defence, was moved up to forward. Prior to games this past weekend weekend against Bobcaygeon, he had fired 14 goals and added 17 assists in 34 games. Murphy, a rookie with the Eagles, has played a limited role this year. He appeared in all but a couple of games, and heading into this weekend, had five goals and eight assists. Robinson, a 6T',' 170 pound left winger with the Wolves, has a keen scoring sense. While Cresanto, at 6'3" and 200 pounds, fits the mold of the big defenceman that teams arc looking for. All four players were born in 1976, and arc in their first full year of draft eligibility. One player who was with the Eagles two seasons ago, Scott Penton, was drafted by the Owen Sound Platers at last year's draft. This year he spent the season with the Oshawa Legionaires. The Central Scouting Bureau compiles a list of 500 players from Ontario Ontario and the Northern United States, which serves as a guideline for teams in the OHL. The list rales players by position, and categorizes their ability ability with a ranking of either AA, A, B, C, or D. Those who raie AA at their respective positions, the highest on the scale, are players who the Central Scouting Bureau feels have the best opportunity to contribute to any team in the OHL. All four area players were rated towards the lower end of the scale on the November list. But that shouldn't discourage them, said the scout. A lot of players take'time to adjust to new teams, and don't develop until later on in the season. "When the next list comes out (in February), they could very well have moved up," he said. The list serves as a guide to OHL teams, who have as many as 4-6 scouts on staff. Teams rely heavily on the reports that their own scouts submit, as a lack of time prohibits most coaches from getting out to games to see the players for themselves. A. coach may only get out to see the top three or four prospects. And what characteristic is it that most scouts are looking for in a player? ' Size is an awful big factor," said the scout. "Teams don't want to have a kid on their defence who is less than six feet tall. Sometimes it's unfortunate that all they look at is a kid's size, but that's what they ^vant." w-Vf - ,- v > • iV'; ' r , I After viewing four to five games per week, plus tournaments, reports by the scouts on particular players are sent back to their respective teams. Coaches and managers prepare their draft list from the recommendations of the team scouts. It's at that time that the future of any young hockey player wishing to pursue a career in the OHL is either enhanced or denied.
